Calorie burning question?

How come when I work out on my treadmill at the end of 30 min it says I burn about 310 calories. I am walking at different inclines at different speeds. But, on my fitnesspal it only says I burned like 180 calories?

  • I have that issue also. There is variance from machine to machine. Not only that but users fill up the database. It could be that you are selecting someone elses info. I look for the exercise or machine, and change the time and calories burned to match what my machine says when it gives me my summary.

    Hey i had the same problem, what i started to do is make another exercise called Treadmill1 and just put in what the treadmill says

    Be careful to go with the machine - they are NOT always accurate....What do you do to burn 310? I'm 5'8, 177lbs and just finished a 45min outside run - and burned 478 cals according to my hrm...
    A heart rate monitor is a great help...
  • well if you are running at different speeds and inclines My Fitness pal has no way of knowing your intensity level if you do not enter it that way. You cant spend 30 min on a treadmill doing 4 different speeds than put in 30 min on treadmill 4.0 mph and expect it to be the same. Also my fitness pal doesnt really have a way to put your incline in either
  • The "calorie" count on a treadmill is based on a 150 pound person, unless you can manually change the weight. Plus, you really need to use a heart rate monitor to get a close count of calories.

    After years of walking and jogging on treadmills at different speeds and with some incline, I have found that the average is 100 calories per MILE. If you workout for 30 minutes and run a 6-minute mile, you'll burn about 500 calories. If you workout for 30 minutes and walk a 15-minute mile, you'll burn about 200 calories. Of course there are variances, but I've read this same estimation in many places.

    So unless you have a heart rate monitor it is probably safest for your weight loss to go with the lower number ... sorry. :(
