How are you controlling it? any tricks besides the good ol' inhaler? My asthma seems to be getting worse and since I started running (In sept. 2011) I keep getting sick. Right now I'm battling walking pneumonia again (has it last Nov.). It takes forever for my lungs to recover and my training runs do not improve b/c of it.

What do you do? do you also get sick often?

  • I have asthma, and I run every day. I definitely do breath a lot harder than most people when I run, but I just push through it (unless I really feel like I'm going to pass out, or something). I'm actually finding the more I do it, the easier it gets, and I've gained a lot more control over the way I breath when I'm exercising.

Also, I used to get sick ALL the freaking time. It was annoying! Over the last year, though, I've only been sick two or three times. I'm not sure if it's because I've been exercising more or what, but I do know my lungs seem to be doing a little better!

I have asthma. I haven't started running yet, but I start training for the Indy 500 mini marathon next week. I've been working out for the past year and have noticed a great improvement with my asthma since I've changed my eating habits and started working out. Dropping white flour and most processed foods from my diet seemd to have made the biggest improvement! Before I did that my asthma was much worse and I got brochitis at least 2-3 times a year. Now, I've been 2 years without getting it at all. And I've only hit the emergency room with a bad asthma attack once in that time.

Honestly, the best way I've found to control my asthama.....is running! However, I had walking pnuemonia about a year ago and I remember it took me about 6 weeks to fully recover from it.

We're all different so without knowing any other details. I would fully recover from your pnuemonia and then try running again...slowly.
