My friend and I were just complaining to each other about how difficult it is to find a gym with every fitness activity we want to do - and how expensive it would be to pay for individual classes at 5 different places in order to have a fulfilling physical regimen. So we started brainstorming our ideal gym. It got me wondering what other people would want in the absolute ideal gym for your tastes.

Ours would include:

Location on the water for water sports like paddle boarding and kayaking
Close to outdoor running trails
Indoor and outdoor pools for laps
Huge selection of Pilates mat classes
Dance classes - everything from classical ballet to zumba and hip hop
Boxing classes - sparring optional
Group trips on the weekends - hiking, sea kayaking, snowshoeing, etc
Would not open till 3PM on weekdays so that majority of classes are available after normal work hours - except during the summer when there would be early morning pilates and water sports outside
Well designed architecturally with lots of natural light and ventilation

So what would yours be??

With the exception of the lake, outdoor pool and horrible hours you want, my Y has all that.

I heart my Y. The only thing on my list would be patrons that wipe the machines!

haha what I wouldn't give for a gym with hours like that. It drives me nuts when every class I want to take is while I'm at work!
  • I think classes should be offered two or three times a day so people on different sceduals can take them.

I really like the outdooreyness of your gym I would love to go there; but I would want it open 24/7 because my husband works nights and I love working out after midnight.

Many Y's have been renovated to include much of what you would like and you only have to pay what you can afford.
See if your local Y has been updated.

Eh I checked out a couple in my area and was sorely disappointed. I would LOVE to go to the Y, but the classes are as standard as they come and the schedule sucks. the only thing I'd be really interested in would be the pool, and even the schedule for that was pretty restricting.

    My dream gym would have:
    - free (included in to the monthly fee) childcare that resembles a playground
    - wide variety of classes, including TRX, circuit training, callanetics, and not just the boring yoga and pilates
    - Drop off children classes, at the same time when adult classes offered
-gym euipment should include alternative things like weighted hoola hoops and jump ropes etc and not just weight machines
    - many racket sport facility such as squash bedminton and inside and outside tennis court . Plus individual and group classes that teaches these for both adult and children
    - LONG hrs , especially on weekends and holidays, when most people have the most time to go there and have some family fun

I loved Lifetime Fitness in Eden Prairie, MN. Tons of classes, indoor/outdoor pool, spas, sauna, eucalyptus steam room, huge cardio selection, huge free weights and weight machines, nice gym, rock wall, amazing children's area, nice and very clean locker rooms, kid classes, outdoor classes (I am pretty sure), day spa, delicious and healthy cafe with a smoothie/juice bar. Totally the best gym ever. Good prices for what you get. Too bad I don't live in MN anymore.
