My weight loss and exercise has been going pretty good, but i went over alittle last weekend so i really pushed my self with limiting calories this week, and i exercised every day, i didnt burn alot of calories each day (about 140 or so each day+350 once)but for me thats alot of exercise, what i want to know is being so low in my daily intake, can it make you depressed, because im feeling really down today, but i have nothing to be sad about. I am upping my calories today and for the weekend back to my "myfitnesspal" goals, but i wanted opinions for if not getting enough calories can make you feel down.

I'm with you... If I don't eat enough calories I feel exhausted and incredibly emotional - borderline depressed. I'm not a doctor, but it's happened enough times that I can say with some certainty there definitely is a correlation there, at least for me. Best thing to do is get back to your normal routine and see how you feel then.
  • I was feeling the same way not too long ago, and I have nothing to be sad about either. I went to my Dr and they really do have the best advice. I was actually put on medication, and it is helping so much. I have been so much more motivated and willing to work out everyday. Good Luck, I hope you get to feeling like yourself again real soon.

Yeah man I hear you. I have been cutting for 6 months and some days, I am just completely down in the dumps.

When you feel this way, just remember why you are doing this and think of the results you have achieved thus far. Right now, whenever I am tempted to eat or when people ask me to eat junk food, I just feel my abs and feel the definition and that makes me feel better. Shallow I know, but when I started, I didnt have anything near abs it was just all fat. Feeling them reminds me of how hard I have worked and what I have achieved so far.

Low fat diets also make you feel this way. The only time in my life that I have EVER been depressed is when I went on a low fat diet. Never again!

That happened to me also.. After Christmas I went for 2 lbs a week which dropped my calories... For 2 weeks I was sad, miserable, easily agitated. I wond up upping my caloric intake by 250 calories and I feel so much happier and energetic.

Eat what mfp says to, under 1200 calories is not optimum.

Food has always been a mood stimulator for both my husband and myself.

Difficult to choose which foods are best to boost the mood up a few notches.

  • Double post, sorry
  • I sometimes find myself in a rut like that. I seem to snap out of it after a day or two. Chin up, the end result is worth it

You know what? If eating alot makes you feel depressed, try to remember that the next time you go to overeat! Eating healthy makes you feel good right? So stick with that! No one ever felt bad for eating well, only when they eat bad. I find if i fall off the wagon, i start a snowball of eating anything and everything in sight. I'll even be full and still stand in the doorway of the fridge and go "what can i squeeze in? What tastes good that i can eat now?" *BUT* if i eat well all day, at the end of it, i'm LOVING myself! It's so hard, i understand, but try try try. AND look up "weight loss affirmations" on Google and say them to yourself all day, i think it helps :D

Me too. Turns out my eating habits were so bad that I had to learn what hunger felt like. It feels like you described: sad, lethargic & etc. not just the stomach-rumbling urge to eat, but the feeling of my body not having enough fuel for basic support. Gives me pause to think of people across the world living with true hunger every day.
