Email Paralysis
The inability to send or reply to emails in a timely manner, caused either by their overwhelming number, or an individual's own shortcomings that stem from spineless avoidance of interpersonal communication.
So I was currious, One of my clients emails me engineering questions about our Diesel Engines, yet when I email him back because he lacks the ability to communcate clearly what it is he wants in his emails. He then waits a couple of days to email me back and then when he does he askes me if I answered his questions... He deffinatly suffers from Email Paralysis...
and thta took me way to long to type because of my hand... :ohwell: :indifferent:

Ha! this is my boss. I'll send an email out, at like 9:00 am asking about a project (time sensitive as they all are in my business) and he'll email me back at like 6:30 at night. Thanks Brian! Plenty of time to work on it now! Don't worry about my time line or anything, what's a measly 8 hours to the company anyway?0

On the other side, I can e-mail my kids' teachers and they get back to me usually within the hour. Which makes me wondering, if they're answering e-mails, who is teaching my kids?0
-
Huh! I so can relate!
My boss also suffers from email paralysis - wait, maybe it's just stupidity..... I'll go with the later.
I'll ask him for a special quote for a custom order, doesn't get back for days.... I'll ask him to put a new part number into the system - takes him days.... It's a wonder why we're still in business. :ohwell:0 -
ok...I am a bit slow this morning....now I get it
I send and receive a ton of emails daily ...I log the send and receipt and keep the record......if they complain about the turn around time, I can usually point out that they opened my email and took their time in responding,,,,,
on the other hand, with emails, it is much more economical than drafting a letter, snail mailing it, etc.
all in all, emails are a great convenience for my business0 -

I agree dave which means you should not dilly dally when responding via email... snail mail would be different... you have plenty of time to dilly dally... :happy:0 -

Yeah, email is deff a convenience, not arguing that here! :drinker:
I'm sure you aren't surfing around on the net all day looking at horses rather than responding to your emails though right? That's what my boss does..... Fools around all day - literaly. :grumble:
I know, I know, that's what I'm doing right now..... But I answer my emails as soon as they come through.... Only goof off online when I'm finished with everything I can do, and am waiting for more.....0 -
Okay... so if people are so bad with their emails why aren't we calling them instead?
Just wondering. In my business if a person doesn't respond to an email within a few hours we pick up the phone and give them a call.0 -

calling doesn't always work...I have to contact different government offices all the time - government people around here never naswer their phones and rarely call back - and email...they're AWFUL at getting back to you - forget about timely, they don't reply at all! But, if you miss one of their deadlines...you're totally out of luck...:grumble:0 -

At work, I prefer email for a paper trail. Otherwise people might say I said X when I really said Y. Emails keep me covered.0 -

Yeah, my boss doesn't answer calls from me. He know's that I'm going to make him make decisions he doesn't really want to answer right away, so if I call he usually lets it ring through to voicemail and says he was either on a call, in a meeting, or working on something that was too important. Mind you, I know what he works on, he just doesn't like answering questions without preparing a long, convoluted answer that allows him not to have to take a stand on anything.0 -

How is he a boss? Yikes!0 -

I understand that completely, but if emails aren't being answered then there's no trail anyway! Haha.0 -
It makes you wonder why people have email if they aren't going to answer it!
Sometimes that happens here...drives me nuts :grumble:0 -
I love my boss, she is the sweetest thing but she is TERRIBLE at answering emails. Then she will come and ask me something about a project she gave me or something and I always say "didn't you get my email? I gave you the status" She doesn't answer her email because she doesn't CHECK it. We also have IM and she wants everyone to be logged in but she never answers that either!!! Drives me crazy sometimes.

Return receipt
HAHA HELL YES!!! thank you... I have to do it this way or he will be like "you never sent me an email", so I always carbon like 8 people on it that way when he says I did not get it then my responce is you need to contact your IT department because these 7 other people so and so's recieved it and they had no trouble... this doesnt flat out accuse him of having email Paralysis, but says I KNOW YOU GOT IT!!! at the same time.0 -

Not only will I return receipt, if I get no response, I will forward the email back to that person with a polite "May I have an update" or "Please advise". The third time I must forward the email back to the person, I start copying their management. (But that is my line of work....)0 -

Although in Lotus Notes (if you use that mail application) you can preview an email without technically opening the email. If Boss knew you were return receipting emails, that could be Boss' workaround.0 -

YES we use Lotus, and NO he does not have Lotus hes not my boss hes just one of our distributors, the one in SC... which I will probabaly be visiting probablay around the 3rd and 4th... *sigh* anything exciting out there? but anywho he is not the brightest either but I will not go there here, back on topic, do you have someone like that?0 -
Yeah, I do the return receipt as well...just to see who reads it & when!
I think in outlook, you can just read the email in the preview window and it won't send back a receipt???
Not totally sure tho :ohwell:0 -

You can read it in the preview window, but as soon as you move to another email it asks you to send the request back to the requester...... :flowerforyou:0 -
Return receipt doesn't mean much for me. My email service asks if I want to send a return receipt... it'd be easy enough to click NO.
I guess it's different for everyone though!0 -

Ah I see...I think how ours is set up, we don't have to click anything to send a receipt, it's automatic...but if I send one to my mom at her email address it will ask her...but I think within the company email, it doesn't ask!0 -
