EAT RED MEAT

Top Reasons to Eat Red Meat in Moderation
The results of a 10-year study, published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that eating red meat every day increased the risk of dying prematurely from cancer, heart disease, and other causes. (Red meat was defined in the study as all types of beef and pork, including bacon, cold cuts, ham, hamburgers, hot dogs, and steak, as well as the meat in pizza, chili, lasagna, and stew.)
The study, which followed 500,000 men and women ages 50 to 71, showed that eating the equivalent of a quarter-pound hamburger daily gave men a 22 percent higher risk of dying of cancer and a 27 percent higher risk of dying of heart disease compared to those who ate just 5 ounces of red meat a week. Women who ate large amounts of red meat had a 20 percent higher risk of dying of cancer and a 50 percent higher risk of dying of heart disease than women who ate less.
Experts don’t know for sure why red meat and processed meats are associated with these increased risks, but the most likely explanations, according to the researchers, include the fact that meats can be a source of carcinogens formed during cooking; that the iron in red meat may increase particular cell damage, leading to health problems; and that the saturated fat found in certain cuts of meat has been linked with breast and colorectal cancer as well as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which increase the risk of heart disease.
While this study is important because of its size and detail, it is also important to understand that you do not have to give up all red meat to enjoy a healthy diet. The South Beach Diet has always recommended eating a wide variety of high-quality protein, including lean red meats (which are good sources of the necessary nutrients zinc, selenium, and B vitamins), omega-3-rich fish, skinless white meat chicken and turkey, beans and other legumes, and soy products. And this latest study supports our plan, finding that the intake of fish, chicken, turkey, and other poultry was often protective, with those eating the most having a slightly lower risk for overall heart and cancer deaths.
And because the South Beach Diet is a realistic lifestyle, no food, including red meat, is off limits if you eat it in moderation (think of protein as an accompaniment on a plate filled with vegetables and whole grains). When you do eat red meat, be sure to do so occasionally (once a week as the study suggests would be prudent) and choose the lean cuts (flank steak, lean sirloin, London broil, and pork tenderloin, for example).
The bottom line: You should continue to enjoy the wide variety of lean meats recommended on the Foods to Enjoy lists, avoid highly saturated and processed meats, and keep exercising, thereby increasing your odds for a long and healthy life.

Have you gone to the doctor for that? If you have serious issues digesting meat there could be a problem with your pancreatic enzymes.0 -

Its more because I used to rarely eat meat... like.. months at a time between eating meat. I could most likely build myself back up but dating a vegetarian girl, and being unable to afford meat for the most part, I really haven't had a reason. Plus I've noticed that a vegetarian lifestyle is better suited for weight loss (when used properly at least).0 -
