After 8 years in the Air Force, I decided to start my own business. I became a professional full time pet sitter & dog walker in Nov 2007 and I am LOVING it!

    Being self-employed is challenging, though...
I envy you!!! I so want to do some kind of work with animals but I can't afford the change. What I would really LOVE to do is pet photography but I know nothing about photography, I know lots about animals but not photography. I would love to spend my days surrounded by dogs!!!!!

If you love it so much, I am POSITIVE that there are ways you can get into it. Of course, you would want to keep your current job while you are learning and building clients... but ... anything you have your heart set on is worth trying for. I was very lucky that I have a supportive fiance that covered the initial costs. Now that I have been in business for a year and a half, I'm pulling in a steady paycheck. Without him, it isn't enough to live on, but it is a very good supplement. It has the potential to be a lucrative business, but I prefer not to be working long hours all the time. The only drawback is that I must work major holidays - and they are usually really busy!

Maybe you could take up photography as a hobby for a while until you get really comfortable with it. Pet Photography is good business, as more and more people treat their pets as their own children!

I'm a full-time military-technician at an Army Reserve Unit Facility in Kansas. I'm on a term-position right now in the equipment department (get my foot in the door) and hoping to move into a mechanic position before my term is up. I'm also a CH-47D Chinook Helicopter mechanic and crewchief in the Army Reserves. Weekend warriors!! Working for "the man"!

I am the assistant to a financial advisor for a major investment firm, but before that I worked in Army Oil Analysis processing your Chinook oil samples Sarge!!!! (before the Army closed all labs on each base and went to regional labs)

Right on. Your in LA...were you stationed at Fort Polk or somewhere else? I'm over here at Aviation Support Facility on New Century Airfield in Olathe Kansas; our Reserve Unit is Bravo Company 7-158th AVN REGT/ 11th TAC/244th Brigade. If that rings a bell. Ah, oil samples. I HATE `EM.

Nope, I wasn't in the military, AOAP is contracted out to civilians. You might hate em, but they keep your
equipment flying!! There were labs at every base, but then the Army decided to streamline and regionalize the progam so there are only a few open stateside now. You were correct though, I did work at Ft Polk. If you ever came down to JRTC for training....we processed the samples.

I am the main bread winner in our relationship so it would definately have to be something on the side. I have thought about looking into photography classes. I just haven't found any that fit my schedule, budget. I will keep looking though. I just love being around animals. I would rather be around them then people. Is that weird?

Absolutely not! Why do you think I chose to be a pet sitter? I typically have to meet new clients only once or twice... and then I get to spend gobs of time alone with their pets! I relate very well to pets, especially cats. But people can be tricky sometimes.

I did really well in the military, but I'm not a social butterfly. I'm very happy with animals and I also enjoy meeting other people who are as crazy about animals as I am!

Oh... also, rather than looking for structured classes, why don't you try to find a photographer that is willing to spend some time with you and mentor you? You might be able to set up a schedule that is better than structured classes... and you may pay a lot less if you find the right person... just a suggestion. Or maybe you can volunteer at a local no-kill shelter and bring your camera along and practice taking pictures of the homeless pets?

I am a Program Administration Officer for a Government funding program focused on Agricultural Bioproducts research. I love my job, but it is an office job where I end up staring at email or spreadsheets for most of the day. Not the best thing if you are trying to loose weight

Being at work is the only time I really get to communicate with grown ups, so I would miss that.
