Recommended Heart Rate Monitors?

Does anyone have a brand/type of heart rate monitor they recommend? I would like to buy one, but there are so many options, I don't know where to begin.

My exercise routing consists of jogging (on a treadmill or outside), using the elliptical, and taking some fitness classes, such as kickboxing. I'd like something that I can wear to each of these, both to know what my heart rate is and also to calculate calories burned.

At the gym today, I used the hand-grip hear monitor on the treadmill, and I'm sure it must have been wrong. According to the chart on the treadmill, I should have been targeting 140-150 for my heart rate, but the monitor had me between 180 and 190. That had to be wrong.

Thanks in advance for any input...

I have the polar FT4 heart rate monitor and that comes with a chest strap, you couldn't go with with that one!

Polar is the most popular brand.. FT4, FT7,FT40 and FT60.

I've used the FT7 and FT60.. both are easy to use/set up, and pretty accurate. The FT60 has a few more bells and whistles then the FT7 though.
