GEL-in like a felon

I am starting to train for a marathon, and have been wondering about gels. I have read a lot of different reviews, mostly from people who (seemingly) had never used them.

Has anyone used any kind of gel (GU, Gatorade Prime, etc) and if so, what were your impressions on how it impacted your training?
