protein drinks

I've noticed many people drink protein drinks or have protein bars during the day. Is this to fill you up? Or is there some other reason? Just wondering if I should look into that as well. And....if so....what's the best tasting one to get? The old fashioned Slim Fast shakes used to be yucko so hopefully those things taste better nowadays!

for me it's for energy pre and post workout. I have half a shake before and half after. the protein'll give me the energy I need and help feed the muscle I'm trying to build ) I like buying the pre-mixed shakes and I prefer atkins shakes, the strawberry flavor.0

My current favorite recipe is using Premier Protein Chocolate Milkshake powder from Sam's.
2 scoops of the protein powder
1 oz sugar free chocolate "syrup" (the kind you put in your coffee... found in the coffee isle)
6 oz fat free milk
hand full of ice cubes
Blend until smooth.
Tastes just like a Frosty from Wendy's. I crave them!!
My other favorite is:
1 scoop vanilla EAS whey protein powder
1 banana (ripe is best. good and sweet)
1/2 cup frozen mixed berries
1 tbsp flaxseeds
1/2 cup water
handful of ice
Blend until smooth. Yummo!0 -
Basically protein shakes and bars are nothing more than meal replacements to help get you your macros for the day. Shakes are great post workout as long as you mix with water for the fastest absorption rate. I mix a tsp of dextrose with mine post workout to help spike insulin for quick absorption. But other than that you will have a personal preference on taste, i prefer a chocolate flavor such as dymatizes iso-100 gourmet chocolate. Hope that helped0

My macros include 125g of protein a day right now. This means I HAVE TO EAT IT every day. The protein drinks give me more variety than chicken and other foods... because I have limited carbs.0

I like easy "meals". I seriously am not a cooker. SO things like Meal Replacement Protein Drinks make my day *so* much easier. And I put the meal thing in Upper Case for a reason. Most protein drinks are not made to replace meals, and they will say so on the label. That is the reason, personally that I drink things like GNC's Total Lean and HerbaLife, with vitamins.0

I'd advise against using a protein shake to fill you up. It simply does not equate to eating an equivalent amount of whole food, especially in the satiety department. Once you start adding stuff to it, like bananas, oats, peanut butter or whatever else your dreaming up, your sitting at a 500 calorie shake that is gulpable in a matter of seconds if you're really hungry. In a pinch they are a great way to get your protein macros up, otherwise use it as a supplement where your diet lacks protein.0

THanks everyone. I've just been trying to figure out what the purpose was and if it's something I need to do.0

I use them to make up a protein shortfall at the end of a day, not because I'm hungry necessarily.0
