I am new to running (as an adult -- ran in high school). I've been running for about 6 weeks, and I ran a 5k yesterday. I am signed up to run a half marathon in three months. It will be my first. However, there's another half marathon in another city that very next weekend. How smart (or stupid) is it to run two half marathons back to back (only six days recovery time in between)?

After 4 months of training you should be able to do that. Take it easy during the week in between. You also may not be able to run the second one as hard as the first.
I would recommend building a weekly long run to 10 mi + between now and then.0 -
You should be ok if you train properly for it. Remember to take 2-3 days of no running after the first 1/2 even though you will feel like you shouldn't. Your muscles and joints need a rest after a run that long. I have been doing 10k races in the past and just signed up for my first 1/2. Super stoked!!0
