Help for my husband as far as nutrition!

He can't figure out how many calories he should be eating. He's subscribed to the thought that eating less will equal more loss. Which is mostly my fault since I've spent years with an ED- he's watched me calorie restrict and lose weight quickly after binge eating. He's almost become manorexic at this point and I know he's not eating enough. He's lost 4 lbs in a little over a month. I know that's not bad, but I feel like he's not eating enough calories and is setting himself up for failure. He's eating less than 1000 calories a day!
He's wanting to gain muscle and lose fat. He's doing cardio and burning around 500 calories per time and is able to do that at least 4-5 days a week. He also is working on our bowflex but mostly works his upper body- arms and chest. He's added protein shakes to his diet but lunch and dinner consists of lean cuisines. I have food issues and I eat more than him!
He currently weighs 211 and is 5' 11" tall. HELP! I know there are a few of you guys on here that are building muscle and eating a bunch of calories while losing weight too... so please HELP!

Calculate his maintenance calories, then have him eat atleast 1.25grams of protein per lean body mass. Lean body mass is your total weight - bodyfat %. Soo a 200lb guy with 15% bf would = 170lbs of lean body mass. 170x1.25 = 212.5g of protein. Then you take .25-.5 grams of fat per lean body mass. Rest is carbs. And the 500 cal defecit to lose is bs. You need to take off 10-20% of ur cals from maintenance. He needs to decide if he wants to build muscle or cut fat, it's tougher on the body to do both at the same time. I would cut down to sub 15% bf then begin a slow bulk if it was me. Hope i helped0

I'm not sure how much body fat he has. Is there a way to figure it at home without having a caliper? He does want to build muscle but at this point, it's more important that he lose the fat THEN build the muscle.0
