I'm lucky -- I live in Seattle, which is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I get most of my exercise outside -- I row on the water 2-3 mornings a week, I run around Greenlake once a week, I hike or go snowshoeing on the weekends, I go orienteering every other week (trail running with a map and compass). The gym definitely has a place in my workout routine (a circuit training class with a colleague on wednesday nights), but for me, fitness is about pursuing adventures in the great outdoors with confidence and competence.
The biggest motivator for me to lose weight is to be fit enough to get to amazingly beautiful places (see my profile pic!), and to keep up with my more fit friends while I do. I'm hoping that if I reach my goal weight, I'll feel comfortable enough to sign up for courses with the Mountaineers, or to join Search and Rescue. I want a lifetime of adventures ahead of me, and I don't want my lack of fitness to hold me back.
As a result, I'm looking to friend other people who have similar goals and passions -- people who'd rather spend six hours hiking in the rain than an hour in the gym!
