Hey guys. I started working out about 3-4 weeks ago. I have changed what I have been eating and working out nearly everyday. I am really nervous because I usually have my period every 28 days. I am 2 days late....would exercising and changing my food habits change my cycle? Anyone else experience this?

Affected me when I first started working out properly.
    Soon sorted out though.
I was a week late I think the first time but then as my body got used to it I settled back into the normal cycle.

I am really glad to hear that. Maybe my head can relax for a bit and stop driving my husband crazy:)

I noticed some additional wonkiness in my cycles when I started exercising and eating better, too. To be fair to my ovaries, most of my wonkiness is perceived because I often forget that 28 days only equals a month once a year and forget to minus 2 or 3 when I consider when the crimson tide is due back again.

I had heard "through the grapevine" that sudden drastic dietary changes can be responsible for cycle changes. Culprits named to me have included alterations to fat intake, carb intake, water (specifically dehydration linked to suddenly increased exercise) and even some vitamin and mineral imbalances. Your post made me curious if any of those FOAF (friend of a friend) tales were urban legends or true so I hit up google and found an article right away written by an ob/gyn. The first three named causes of irregularity she listed are diet and exercise related.

Obviously, keep track and if it does not fix itself in a couple cycles call your doc and/or take a long hard look at your specific diet.
Maybe hit up your local dollar store for a stash of emergency pregnancy tests juuuuust in case?

Thanks for that site. The only time my hasband and I have gotten pregnant is when we wanted to...I really do not want to take a test lol. Of course if I was pregnant I would grow to be happy about it but i just isnt a good time now that I am trying to get back on top of my health and start thinking about me.

It will DEFINITELY effect it. I've lost over 20 lbs and was training for a half marathon at the same time. As a result, no period for 5 months!
  • Mine started 6 days early -_-

When you work out it relaxes the muscles in your uterus so you don't bleed as heavily so maybe that has something to do with it. I wouldnt worry if its only been a few days though.

Mine is the opposite. What used to be a few short days, is now going and going on. Who knows.

I'm on continuous Birth Control (3 months on then have a period) so I only have 4 periods a year, but since I started working out 10 months ago, I have had no period at all. I went to my OBGYN, did a sonogram and everything. Turns out that my uterine lining is just super thin - like tissue paper. She said not to worry about it, that everything was fine and to just keep doing what I was doing as long as nothing else was bothering me. So far, so good and I certainly don't miss Aunt Flow's visits.

Yeah...mine came almost 3 weeks EARLY and since I'm on the pill, its still going (im assuming due to the hormones...). Hope my body figures it self out soon...its so annoying. lol.

If there's any chance you're pregnant you should take a test, even dollar store tests are super accurate once you're actually late.
Apparantly it's super common, for me my cycles have actually normalized with better diet and exercise. Make sure you're not cutting calories too much and getting enough rest (i.e. not overtraining).
If you've been stressed it's not uncommon to ovulate later in your cycle than normal. That's why it's so important to get plenty of rest and eat enough (not cut too many calories from your diet, maintain a good macronutrient balance).

take a test and put your mind at rest. Mine went down from 5 days to maybe one. I keep working out to keep it that way. Plus I have little PMS symptoms. Thank goodness for that!

I'm on birth control pills so my cycle is regular... could my cycle change with better exercise and diet even though I take birth control? Mine was regular this past time...but I had only been eating better/exercising for 2 weeks at the point it came.
