Exercising continuously vs. in chunks?

This has probably been asked several/countless times 
I usually do an hour or two at the gym, but at home,
I find myself on the bike or elliptical for 10, 15 minutes then going back on again like an hour later or so for 10 or 15 minutes.
Is there really a difference?
