Has anyone else had a close encounter with a vehicle while u were cycling? Had did u convince yourself to get back on and ride again? Today was the first ride of the season. I had fun up until the ford windstar decided to not pay attention. All I can see now is his bumper coming at me in slow mo. I'll push through it I'm sure. Just wanted to see how others have pushed through. (Jill)

Yikes, glad you're okay! I haven't been on my bike in years  but my brother and his family are avid cyclists, and do long distance rides all the time. My nephew was hit one evening by a woman who wasn't paying attention, didn't see him and turned right in front of him. He hit her bumper and went up into her windshield - thank goodness he was wearing his helmet, and wasn't seriously injured. The paramedics were impressed with his helmet and how well it protected his noggin - he rides for the Specialized junior team, so they provide him with some primo gear, and we are thankful for that!

That was about a year ago, and he still rides and competes all the time. I think it freaked my sis-in-law out more than anyone else. Well, and the lady driving the car.

When they first started cycling years ago, my brother would always tell the boys to remember the #1 Rule: People are idiots! And the #2 Rule: Don't be an idiot! Basically, watch out for cars & never assume that they see you, which I'm sure you know.

The only close calls I've had is when I'm driving and a bicylist refuses to obey traffic laws and believes they have the right of way.

Exactly! I almost took one out awhile back - he was in the wrong at least 4 different ways and he knew it. Had I not been paying attention, he would have become part of the grill on my pickup! The sweet part was (aside from me NOT hitting him, which would have been awful) that an oncoming police officer saw the whole thing, flipped a u-turn and pulled the cyclist over! Wish I could have heard the conversation, and wonder if he cited him for breaking Rule #2. Haha!

Bicyclists, due to the fact that they have to obey the traffic laws just as vehicles (in Georgia), are subject to citations. However, good luck getting the court to prosecute them, seeing as most of the judges ride themselves. Down here, there is an arrogance about the bicyclist community and they believe vehicles should yield the right of way to them.

I ride my bike year round and almost get hit frequently. I do disobey traffic laws all the damn time, but only when there aren't any cars around.

Last summer I almost got hit by a car that tried to make a left hand turn without seeing me as I had the right of way to go straight through the intersection, and then that car almost got hit by another car that wasn't paying attention.
