So I can't afford weights, but my high school health teacher always said that you could lift cans and stuff for strength training if you couldn't afford them. Good idea or no?

You can try to pick up a few iron plates from a second hand sporting goods store usually at 50c a pound or so. Otherwise I am sure paint cans can be mighty useful I am sure!0

Hey I started out using soup cans!
You do what you can do! However, FYI, keep your eyes peeled for local yard sales/garage sales. People might be giving them away or selling them for cheap.
My Mom let me borrow her 3's and 5's. She's been into yoga lately and doing less time in her own gym.
If was quite the difference though going from soup cans to 3 lbs each. But like I said, you start where you can with what you already have available to you.0 -
Sure, they might not look so fancy but it's a good place to start.
Its a great idea to look out for garage sales etc though, you might find some for a bargain price.0
