I started losing weight January of 2011. I did the Turbo Fire program and watched my calories. I'm pretty much at my goal weight, wouldn't mind losing a little more, but want to focus on losing fat. Up until this point I have not been the healthiest eater. So I am taking baby steps, and first I am eating more fresh foods. But I was wondering do you think I should cut back on fat or carbs...or both? I know calories, but am unsure about all the different nutrients. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone? Do you think it matters what I eat as long as I am staying at or going under my calories?
  • Yeah it really does matter. Check out the book Wheat Belly. And cut back on carbs and saturated/trans fat... But mostly carbs mainly sugar and grains.

    I am no expert.

But from the reading I have done since starting here, the basic gist is try to get more calories from lean protein, and less from carbs, fat and sugar.

    Hope this helps!

I have tried to get more protein, but I think I should cut back on fat, especially saturated fat. I usually eat whole grain breads, at least when I eat at home.

Congrats on almost being to your goal weight! That is no easy feat. If you want to lose more fat I would worry more about doing a strength training routine vs. cals, carbs, fat, etc. That is ultimately what will help you at this point. I'm talking about lifting weights, heavy weights. Of course, keep up the cardio if you have a bit more fat to lose. As for fat and carbs, I find the preset macros on MFP to be too low for protein and too high for carbs. I have my goals set to 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Likewise, make sure you are getting a good amount of fiber. This is especially important if you are eating high amounts of protein. I find more protein and fiber in my diet helps satisfy my hunger longer and is, of course, great for muscle recovery and growth. A good amount of healthy fat is essential too, fats that come from things like oil, nuts, fish, avocados. Good luck to you.

Thank you for the advice. I usually eat over the amount of protein, usually over 100, and I do make sure I get enough fiber. I guess I do need to cut down on carbs...it's hard. I do cardio and weights, but not a lot of heavy weights. I have Chalean Extreme, but didn't stick to it because I really disliked it. I have been doing 30day shred mixed with tae bo and zumba lately.

I set my goals to 45% carbs, 30% protein, and 25% fat. Do you think that is reasonable? I'm not sure how well I'm going to do initially, I need to eat some of these carby foods I have before I can justify going to the store again.
