Justs wondering what everyone thinks about this article? I am thinking about cutting carbs (I am a pasta addict) to try to lose some more weight. Just not sure if it will make any difference.

Someone else posted this same article and the entire thread blew up with arguement.

So I'll just go ahead and say that I have been eating 50-60 grams of carbs for the past 3 weeks and have lost 7 pounds. I also go over my calories almost everyday. It's worked for me so try it.

This is no way meant to start a argument, but I'm confused. I think the source is the "go over my calories almost every day" combined with losing 7lbs in the last weeks.

Maybe I'm being obtuse, but what kind of caloric deficit have you been running given that you're going over on calories to that extent and have significant weight loss? I'm probably just not reading too much, or the wrong thing, into "going over."

To the OP's point, and for whatever it's worth, put me in the anecdotal column of "carbs haven't done anything to hamper my weight loss as far as I'm aware." But since we don't have the same body, it probably doesn't mean much :)

I've cut carbs like cake, bread, pasta & rice. Still get carbs from Bananas. I've lost 19lbs since cutting out carbs! I also haven't been bloated since. I love it and say ... Go for it! Worth a try! :) x

It is worth a try. You may feel really tired for the first few days as your body adjusts to not getting as many carbs. That feeling goes away and then you'll have more energy.

I have been off and on dieting for about a year and I get so frustrated with feeling hungry all the time and eating "right" and exercising without losing weight. I lost 0 lbs over the summer while training for a half ironman!!! I started eating primal/paleo and with very little effort have lost 7 lbs. I am never hungry either! Google primal or paleo. It can be hard, but just try it for 1 month. Give it a chance and see what happens.

Watch the movie "Fathead". It's free on youtube and explains how low carb works. It's pretty entertaining too.

I'm sorry. I don't really understand your question about caloric deficit. Could you rephrase what you are asking me? I will be happy to explain

While I absolutely LOVE carbs, if it's your last 10 pounds you're working on, you may very well have to tweak your diet a bit. I can get away with eating portion controlled stuff until I get into/around a healthy weight range, but then when i'm trying to go lower than usual I do often have to tweak my diet so that i'm eating more fiber and less simple carbs. I don't cut them out completely but I do cut down on them and eat more lean meats and fresh fruits and veggies.

FWIW, i've lost 12 pounds since Jan 1st with portion control only.

If you are a pasta addict then it seems logical that cutting the object of your addiction could cause you to lose weight. It also suggests that this addiction could make total abstinence from pasta hard to maintain.

But other than eating less carbs causing you to eat less calories overall, it doesn't really make any difference for most people (wihtout metabolic/hormonal disorders). I lost 27 lbs and have maintained it for 8 months without cutting carbs. I just focus on healthy balanced eating and exercise.

You may need to try several diets before finding what will work for you long term. Good luck!

    hmm...

Because you've lost weight, I assume you've been running at a caloric deficit. That is, you've burned more than you've taken in. I was wondering how big of a deficit you were eating at while you were losing weight because it sound almost as if you were suggesting that you were eating at a surplus (or at least close to maintenance) while you were losing weight...which sounded odd.

My assumption was that my interpretation of what you were saying was off.

When I say that I go over my calories, I mean that on a lot of days I eat 300 to 500 calories MORE than the 1200 that I'm set at. Often this is also AFTER eating my excersize calories back. .....and I'm still losing weight! It blew my mind as well! The only thing I can attribute that to, is the fact that I only eat around 50g of carbs a day. If I just watch my calories and pay no attention to carbs, I do lose weight, but I'm hungry all the time and then I give up. Portion control sucks!!! It also takes longer for me to drop a pound or two. So....

I started eating low carb about three weeks ago (this wednesday starts my 4th week of it). So far, I have been able to sustain this way of eating because I don't get hungry eating what I eat and I don't have to focus so much on calorie intake. It has worked really well for me.

Did I answer your question? I eat more calories than I should, even after eating back exersize cals, and have still lost weight, pretty quickly.

I think eating a bit more than MFP allows occasionally and still losing is pretty common. Throughout my weight loss and maintainence I typically went over a few to several hundred calories every Saturday and Sunday but was usually pretty close on weekdays. On vacations I went over most days. It's the big picture that matters.

I agree.... But in my experience, I have never been able to lose by going over until now. So for me, it is working.

Not really, the only thing you can take away from that movie is that eating in a caloric deficit regardless of actual food choices makes you lose weight. All the stuff on low carb is junk science

It did answer my question, thank you. I think I was putting the cart before the horse, logically speaking. That's probably not clear, but I don't think I can articulate it better without having lunch first.

I think if I were in that situation, my conclusion would be that MFP's idea of both my maintenance and what I should be eating is inaccurate :) So when you say that you eat more calories than you should, I tend to disagree. It sounds like you're doing things pretty spot on if you're getting the results you want.

    Grats on the weight loss.

Yeah.... You're probably right. I guess all those years of working in food science did nothing for me. Oh well. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Again, this is compared to my past experiences as well. I don't think it has everything to do with how many calories I'm getting, as I've tried tons of different methods. Do whatever works. Everyone is different.

I am a firm believer in nutritious, WELL-BALANCED meals and snacks in sensible portions.
That means fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats.

ETA - different bodies work best with different ratios of fat/carbs/protein, so some people might do better on lower than average carbs, but I still think it's a good idea to maintain a well-balanced approach to food.

?? Your diary tells a very different story.
  • No argument from me, just want to share my story! I've lost fourteen pounds since November! I like you, love my carbs, I just monitor my intake. I would hate for you to give up something you love, that's depriving yourself, LOL. Just continue to modify, tweak or sub but do not stop eating it and then when you start back, guess what? Well I do not have to say it! Good luck to getting those ten pounds off, thanks for sharing!:flowerforyou:

How many times does the movie mention glycogenesis? Also how common of an occurrence is DNL in humans?

As soon as I make it a priority of mine to memorize and recite word-for-word the entire movie (like you seem to think I have), I'll let you know. But don't hold your breath. I have better things to do.
