Food Attendant at Cafe Made Me Feel Fat :(

I've been pretty good lately in terms of confidence, self assurance, etc. But today something really bothered me. During my class this morning I had checked the nutrition facts for the food at one of my campuses cafe's, because I'd be going by said cafe on my way to work. I decided to get the Barbecue chicken salad, because the "whole" size was only 435 calories, and it had veggies and protein in it. So when I got to the cafe and placed my order, the following conversation with the lady taking my order took place:

ME: Barbecue chicken salad please
HER: What size?
ME: Um, the regular.
HER: It's small or large, which one do you want?
ME: Large.
HER: (eyes me for a moment, I can see her eyes look me up and down) You know most people get the small...
ME: Oh.
HER: You sure you want to get the large? (emphasis on the word LARGE)
ME: Okay, fine, I'll get the Small.
HER: I mean, if you want the large, that's fine, I guess.
ME: No, I want the small. Everyone gets the small, right?

The lady was then annoyed because she had to re-enter my order from "large salad" to "small salad."

I was so flustered by the end of it that I just wanted to get my dang salad and leave the cafe as quickly as possible. The Lady's tone was so condescending, like, "you really think a large salad is a good idea? Hmm?"

So now I'm trying to eat this tiny salad (which literally is the size of a side salad, not a meal salad), and I can't even enjoy it because all I can think of is this conversation I had with the meanie Cashier at the cafe.

Sorry for the rant, I just feel so guilty and, well, fat. Sorry for the long post.

What a meanie and totally unnecessary. All she had to do was enter the order as you said it, not add her own personal commentary to it. Sorry. :(

You should have thrown the salad back at her face. As I've started this journey, I've noticed I get opposition just about everywhere I look.

I try to make as many of my own meals as possible to avoid this, but recently stopped at a restaurant for breakfast. I asked for the nutrition facts, and the annoying teenage boy behind the counter just started to poke fun. He was all "why do you need to know that? I can tell you what's healthy." I tried to politely answer that I need to know everything that goes into my food (it's none of his business why after all) and then he proceeded to say how I should have gone online before I came to the store. It's like no s*** dummy! Yeah, maybe if I had the time I would have done that, but I was not planning to stop. Now give me the damn nutrition brochure, shut up, and let me eat what I want! When I finally made a decision we was like, "do you want more cream cheese?"

    NO THANK YOU JERK!!!!

Congrats on your progress so far, and try to ignore all the judgey people out there. This journey is about you and your health so screw the rest! She probably just hates her job and life anyway and the only way she can make it through her miserable day is to try and get pleasure out of making fun of her customers.

The Lady's tone was so condescending, like, "you really think a large salad is a good idea? Hmm?"

 I would have said "Yeah, for me a large salad is a great idea, compared to the large bucket of fried chicken I was going to buy instead..."

Anyways, there's no accounting for azzholes and I'm sorry she said that.

Try not to let someone like that ruin the rest of your day. :flowerforyou:
  • We eat out a lot now that I'm dieting and my guy and my daughter have no need to change how they eat(I wish I could be mad at them about that). I'm been ordering more then I should for two reasons. First whatever I get no matter how much I eat is healthier then leaving hungry and snacking on crap I shouldn't have. And also I have some to take home and I have leftovers for when I cook their high carb meal that they need. I really think that's the part I dislike most about dieting if I have to make to different meals, I find it to be stressful and discouraging.

I've never noticed a dirty look or anything about it but I'm sure I get them along with an eye roll or two. It's all water off a ducks back if they are that negative it is 100% their problem not yours.

If it were me, I would have taken the large salad and split it up for a few meals. Then again I make 3 full meals on a saturday and split them up thru out the week. Keeping in mind I to probably would have been fuming I would have found a comment card and left pleasant thoughts for the wonderful cashier who influenced my mood for the rest of the day.

I had a similiar incident at Van Housen a few years back. My dress shirts are 17 34/35 and 17 1/2 34/35 when they are fitted. I like the fitted because it lessons all the material you have to tuck in. So instead of looking like a big person with most of the shirt sticking out the back and sides you now look like a big person. The woman who was in her late 40's early 50's and ringing up my purchase had the nerve to tell me that the fitted shirts are for more athletic individuals with smaller frames. I smiled politely, bit my tongue and proceeded to write a nice letter to corporate office. Needless to say she didn't work there the next time I stopped in.

Just keep in mind that a positive attitude can overcome a lot of diversity.

People like that get on my nerves. I would have said "I care as little about what other people get as you should about what I get. Now give me the large salad please."

People can be such idiots. You know, a lot of establishments have feedback cards available - or you can go online and leave feedback. If I were you, I'd fill one of them out to let the management know how insensitive this particulare employee is. She is on the front line of the business's customer service and it reflects on the business image. Insensitive idiot employees can cost the company business. They'll want to know. ((HUGS)) to you - don't let the fool ruin your day. She's not worth spending your energy on.
