This is really weird. I can eat cooked carrots without a problem. But the minute I hit the raw carrots my throat starts itching. I start coughing. When I drink a glass of water or something else, it goes away.

WHY????

I'm not sure, but I know when I eat bananas I cough, even banana flavour and I love them hehe, been like that for as long as I can remember

Hope you work it out :)
  • It definitely sounds like a there's something in/on the raw carrot that you are allergic to, but is eliminated while preparing and cooking it.

My dad can eat potatoes, touch them cooked or raw, but his hands break out in a rash if he peels them.
  • Possible allergy, see your doctor.

My DR himself once told me he was in his mid 20s when he figured out he was allergic to a specific RAW vegetable (forgetting which one)....cooked, sauteed, steamed was fine....but he went into anaphylactic shock after consuming the said raw vegetable on an overseas trip.....scary
  • Do you ever get hay fever? Many adults are allergic to pollen from grass, trees, ragweed, etc. Some of them also get "oral allergy syndrome" or "pollen food allergy". The pollen gets into crops in the field, and those allergic to the pollen become allergic to certain raw fruits, vegetables, or nuts. Luckily, cooking usually eliminates the problem, which is fairly common in adults (including myself).
  • im thinking is an allergic reaction of sorts, it might be serious, but it might be nothing to worrie about I would talk to your dr, as it being in your throat its usually not so good:happy:

The same thing happens to me with oranges; orange juice, even someone just peeling the dang thing. My throat itches, I cough, difficult to breathe. what's funny is that I can't even drink orange pop; same thing happens and there's not a real orange-anything in that. i can eat grapefruit and have no problems with lemons/limes.

That is definitely an allergy. I have struggled with food allergies my whole life. The next step after an itchy throat is your throat swelling closed. Stay away from carrots, and go see a doctor!

Definitely sounds like Oral Allergy Syndrome. I can't eat raw apples, peaches, cherries, plums but can eat them cooked without a problem. Can't do raw almonds or hazelnuts either and strawberries are starting to give me issues too. I went to an allergist and he told me it's really common and to avoid these foods or take an allergy med before eating. My reaction to peaches is scary though and I decided to just avoid these foods permanently. And like the previous poster mentioned...it's all related to seasonal allergies. No fun :(

gee didn't know anyone else has that...but i do will read the answers
  • I have the same thing. I also react to apples, pears and cucumbers. It certainly is a nuissance. It's an allergy to beech pollen. For some reason the molecules in the above foods is very close to beech pollen and the body sees it as an allergen. Some people may tell you its because of pesticides. This probably isn't it, eating organic won't help you. If you really want them take an anti-histamine before hand. I do this when I juice these kinds of foods. If you keep eating them constantly you'll find you don't need the anti-histamine every time either.

I've never heard that before? Yes! I am very allergic to ALL those other things! Thanks for the lead!
