Opeth - From extreme black metal to acoustic, melodic beauty.
Muse - one of the best live bands with some amazing riffs.
Karnivool - progressive, melodic metal/rock and not afraid to push boundaries. Vocalist can do no wrong.
    Cog - like Karnivool.
Thrice - Started off as punk and has slowly evolved into progressive rock. Fantastic variety of songs.
Tesseract - one of many "djent" bands that are similar to Karnivool but expand on the varying rhythms and varying song structures. Another vocalist to die for (Dan Tompkins, now left the band tho)
Smashing Pumpkins - Maybe not as relevant these days but still they have left an impression on me that affects my songwriting and guitaring like no other band.
Foo Fighters - come on. No description needed. Some ****ty songs that get flogged on the radio to death but they are my rock n roll gods.
Jeff Buckley - the voice, the guitar playing... beautiful.
Led Zeppelin - I call Opeth the metal version of Led Zeppelin. These guys need no description.
Mastodon - metal/prog rock. Just awesome riffs.
Porcupine Tree - A less metal version of Opeth with more electronic elements. However, Opeth are getting calmer while these guys (namely Steven Wilson, who produced some Opeth albums) are getting heavier.
Queens Of The Stone Age - Bad *kitten* rock, really cool guitar playing and catchy tunes.
Radiohead - for those slow days.
Tool - Another band that needs no description.
Meshuggah - took me a long time to get into this style of metal but I can't get enough of it now. Challenge your concept of timing and threshold for how aggressive a band can make their respective instruments sound.
