Since my husband has been out of town I have been trying to lose weight and eating a lot of chicken. He is coming home soon and I am just not sure how I am going to make low fat dinners that will make him happy too. He really doesn't like chicken. He does like the chicken taco soup I make, but he really likes lots and lots of beef. Any suggestions?

    Do you have a BBQ?
Almost every night we heat up the barbie, and chuck on a whole lot of fresh veggies (Courgettes, onions, capsicums, mushrooms etc) with a little bit of olive oil.
Then he chucks on his huge steak, and I have my small piece of steak (or Chicken/fish etc).
The BBQ veggies go with almost anything and are super filling without using up many of your calories, and the meat should keep him satisfied!! If not, cook him a few potatoes, or tell him to have some bread!
We add spices, herbs or sauces for variation.
(Could be done in frypan/wok if you don't have a BBQ).
We have a 3 year old, and chuck a sausage or two on for him too. Keeps the whole family happy. =)

My family asked if we could have a few nights without fish or chicken so I know what you mean. Tonight we made burritos with taco meat and I used some of the meat in mine but added fat free refried beans so mine was filling without as much beef. Another thing I do is make pasta with broccoli and light alfredo sauce and we add sausages to that. I make regular ones for them and chicken sausage for me. My husband is trying to lose some weight right now so he eats the chicken ones with me and he likes them as well as the regular ones the kids eat. I also make steak sometimes and just make extra veggies so I can eat a smaller portion of meat and still feel satisfied. Tomorrow though we are back to chicken
  • I do 2 different meals. one for my husband nad son, the other for me and my daughter.

Make the soup. Let him make the beef. Cook together. On nights when he doesn't like what you've prepared, he can make his own dinner.

use turkey burgers/ground turkey meet and try not to let him notice the first few times :) it worked on my fiancee and he loves it now!! also deer meat is red and isn't bad b/c of how lean it is, but you have to cook it right or it will taste gamey. good luck!

Check out my site :) I am uploading as much as I can new freshly made, fast, healthy diet friend recipes.
My hubby loves it and I am losing weight (already lost 25lbs this way)

Feel free to add me as friend.
  • My husband supports me and will eat whatever I cook without complaint, but fact is, he likes his beef and pork too. Often I make 2 similar meals in separate pots, so I can make him a full fat beef portion (say pasta sauce) and than I make mine low cal with chicken or turkey. If the foods are similar there is not too much more work to do. Another good option for red meat is game if you have it available. Moose has only 30 cals an ounce, and elk and deer and also good and low cal options for red meat.

"sneak in" better food. Morning star vegetarian crumbles are really low fat and calories, and my daughter has yet to notice it is not hamburger...you can also get the butcher to ground high quality chuck for you and get as close to 99% fat free beef as possible. Also 97% fat free ground turkey, or even high quality ground pork is good. I find that if you get good cuts of meat, although you will pay more it is worth it in the end

I also mostly cook two seperate meats. It is really easy though. I cook the usual for Hubby and for myself I broil a couple pounds of chicken for the week so I just have to microwave my plate. I also cook fish for myself because it is fast. Sometimes I eat the same sides or I just eat lots of extra veggies. I have been making small changes to the families meals, like I no longer add butter to the veggies. I've been eating big salads with my dinner and tonight my Hubby wanted one also. Now he asked if I could make him one whenever I have one. Baby steps, but the conversion is happening.

You are his wife, not his b!tch. Either he eats what you make, or he can make his own.

You just make him get over it and eat healthier with you! At least that's what I did!! He will still ocassionally throw his steak on the grill with my chicken, but for the most part he has converted to chicken and turkey with me. God luck! Definately go with leaner beef if he has to have it.

    I don't understand this.

I am vegan and my husband is an omnivore. While I was trying to lose weight he was not. I have only ever cooked one meal. I log it and my family loves it - because it's delicious.

You're not eating delicious food that he would enjoy? Why not??

We almost never eat chicken and I'm able to stay under my calorie goal. Choose lean red meats and just have chicken/fish a couple days per week.

The only advice I feel I can give is what I use myself.

If my husband doesn't particularly like or care for the dinner I've made, he knows where the kitchen is and knows how to whip up something for himself. It works both ways, if I don't care for something he's made, I just say so and go make my own. No biggie.

Or he just grabs something out on his way home if he doesn't want what I'm going to make.

  • Have you tried Morningstar Farm's Meal Starter Recipe Crumbles? Any recipe that takes crumbled ground beef can use this soy protein substitute. One package is equal to one pound of ground beef. I use it chili, spaghetti, tacos, enchiladas and shepherd's pie. It has way, way less fat and is both a good source of protein and fiber! I cook with it at least once a week.

My fiancéeis good with eating most things I cook, but its easier if its "fun" food so he doesn't have to think thats it actually good for him. Some of our favorites are

    Recipe name Tasty juicy burgers

    Number of servings
    Serves people
Ingredients Calories Carbs Fat Protein Calcium Vit C
    Sobey's (Cdn) - Lean Ground Beef, 790 g 1,738 0 119 150 16 0
    Fresh - Yellow Onion, 1 medium 60 11 0 2 4 20
    Carrots - Baby, raw, 100 g 35 8 0 1 3 14
    Spice World - Minced Garlic , 2 tsp (5g) 10 2 0 0 0 0
    Generic - 100% Whole Wheat Salad Rolls, 1 roll 100 18 2 4 2 0
    Spices - Pepper, red or cayenne, 1 tsp 6 1 0 0 0 2
    Santa Fe - Habanero Powder, 1 tsp 0 0 0 0 0 0
    Spice Classics - Italian Seasoning, 4 tsp 0 0 0 0 0 0

I use my food processor and my stand mixer for this but you can total do it by hand makes a great tasty juicy burger. It you got little ones or don't like spice just dial it down for yourself.
I put the onion and carrots along with the garlic and spices into the food processor and give them a few good pulses to mix it up and get them all ground down. Then I add them to my meat thats sitting in the stand mixer, throw the roll into the food processor and then add that to the meat mixture. Give it a few minutes to mix around alternating the speed and then I separate it into 10 eqaul size portions and then shape them into patties. Then I put some on the indoor grill and freeze the rest.

    Total: 1949 40 121 157 25 36
    Per Serving: 195 4 12 16 3 4

We also eat chicken fajitas with a small amount of chicken and loaded with peppers and onions, then just add some of the prepackaged seasoning.

    Beef Burritos

    Number of servings 4

Ingredients Calories Carbs Fat Protein Calcium Vit C
    Sobeys - Extra Lean Ground Beef, 425 g (1/2 cup) 723 0 43 89 0 0
    Raw, One Medium Whole - Red Onion, 74 g 30 8 0 1 0 3
    Peppers - Sweet, red, raw, 110.0 g 29 7 0 1 1 348
    No Name (Superstore) - Refried Beans W/ Green Chilies, 1.6 cup 400 69 3 22 13 0
    Old El Paso - Burrito Seasoning Mix, 1 container (28 gs ea.) 80 16 0 0 0 0
    Add Ingredient
    Total: 1262 100 46 113 14 351
    Per Serving: 316 25 12 28 4 88

I had these earlier this week and I had one serving with 2 small whole wheat tortilla, and it was plenty.

What is great about all of these too is we can load ours up with tons of veggies.

Not sure who that was directed to but my response is logical and will satisfy both parties given that both parties are reasonable adults. I wasn't being snarky or mean spirited, just honest. It works for some people, others not so much. To each her or his own. :)

What's the point in forcing your partner to eat things that you want but they might not want? You can't make someone love a meal. I mean sure, she could prepare two separate dinners each night (or in advance) if she wants to put in the extra effort and maybe he'll be pleased by that. I do not believe in just because I like something, everyone in the house must like it. In our house, if the kids or my husband or myself doesn't like something food oriented, we fix ourselves something else.

    That's my thought as well..

    I mean...I'm shocked someone doesn't like chicken...chicken is DELICIOUS!

But so is beef, lamb, pork, fish...there are so many options...chicken isn't the only one.

If either one of us puts the time and effort in to make a meal, especially after working all day, we respectfully eat the meal UNLESS it's something we absolutely can not stand (for example I can't eat seafood...texture makes me sick)

Since I do a lot of the cooking during the week...my husband will eat whatever I make or he fends for himself.

This. And the eat beef if you like it. Don't yo yo. Eat pleasant pleasing food that is pleasurable. If you're not eating pleasurable food and enjoying your activities, you'll be right back at the starting point soon enough.

Some meals can be both -- like a build-your-own taco salad type thing. A couple of chips, brown rice, lettuce/tomato/avocado/peppers/cheese, and then taco-seasoned chicken or beef. There are also lots of stir-fry options where you can do a variety of vegetables, some with steak and some with chicken...

You need to work out a compromise. I bet if you talk and let him know that you are willing to give a little (i.e. cooking two meals now and then, or working a little beef into your diet) he will also be willing to give a little and try your new dishes. Who knows, he may love them!

Have you ever looked at the Oxygen magazine? They usually have lots of healthy recipes in their magazine, and on their website. (I just bought a Oxygen cookbook with tons of recipes.) I've been trying out new recipes, and so far my boyfriend has surprisingly loved them.

The website below also has alot of healthy recipes, I've tried most of them and they have been awesome!
