Good exercise for back problems?

Hey all,

I've recently hurt my back - my doctor says my back is like a small child and it will occasionally throw tantrums leaving me in pain. Great!

Anyone have any tips on back strengthening moves? Or any exercise to help me bump up my weightloss. Feel a little silly just taking the dog for a walk.

Pilates is really good for strengthening your back. You could take a class or get a Pilates DVD.

I also found swimming and aqua aerobics to be good exercises too when you've got a bad back.

look up feldenkrais - it worked for me when I strained my neck & back at work! it's about retraining your muscles and realigning your spine - it's a low impact workout though but with back injuries I think you're better off getting it sorted first before worrying about exercise - you definitely wouldn't want to make it worse.

    hope it gets better soon!

I also have back problems and use pilates. So far they have strengthened my back. Good luck! :flowerforyou:

Roller-skating!! Old fashioned Quad-skates or Inline-skates...doesn't matter which.

A Tremendous amount of back muscle involvement is needed for simple leisurely roller-skating. The more you do it, the stronger your back and abs get just trying to keep yourself upright. That's where all your balance is.

For me, exercise needs to be fun. Plus, you burn 600 + calories in an hour due to all the muscle groups involved in skating.

I've been recovering from a really bad flare-up of a back problem for the last two years. Whew! I feel your pain! I've had to be really careful for the last 18 months. Just kind of go slow easing back into activity.

Cheers everyone, I might try a bit of Pilates.

As for roller blading! Who knows! I quite fancied trying out for a derby when I'm a little skinnier ;)
