I got my wife a Polar FT4 from Amazon for less than $60. The Bronze one is the only one that's in that price range, but it's girly. It's listed as Brown/Brown.0

I was looking at Polar ones, and it might be different for US but for those that are in/ship to Australia I was looking at over $100 which was more than I wanted to spend! I am now going to buy a Suunto, which has all the features I need (3 heart rate zones, stopwatch, replaceable battery, comes with chest strap etc) and is about $20-$50 cheaper than a Polar depending where you go. I know Polar is, like, the buzz word of HRM's, but I don't think it's necessary to spend all that much when you're starting out, as you'll be paying for features you don't need. Just don't buy a dollar store one and you'll be ok!0

I recently bought a Polar FT4 from amazon aswell, being a girlie girl like you I got the pink one. I absolutely love it, gives me the extra motivation to keep going as I can see the calories burnt number going up. I think I paid about £54.99 in the UK which would be about $80 I think. Definately worth the money if you can push your budget xx0

Just realised you're in aus too, so here you are, $84 inc express post, worth upping the budget a little for
