Has anyone ever worn a heart rate monitor while playing tennis. The number of calories MFP is coming up with seems high - 10 calories burned per minute (singles.)

I don't think that's inaccurate. Tennis can defnately burn that much if you play intense.

:) Haven't worn a HRM for that though, but I don't think it's too high of an estimate

    anyone else?
  • I wear a BodyBugg when I play and have also worn my HRM to confirm that the stats match on both. I have had numbers ranging anywhere from 350-650c for an hour of singles and slightly less for doubles.

I think the MFP database assumes a very strong singles game, and I don't always play with as much intensity as it assumes. It really depends on how vigorously you play and how much you move. If you have great footwork (ie- never standing still,) don't rest for very long in between points and are a strong hitter, then you can easily burn as much as the MFP database says much or more.

I participated in group class last night where we run drills for the first half (each person waiting their tune in line) and play points for the last half. It was relatively "easy" as far as competition goes, and I still burned close to 350cal during it. Those are my numbers though, and my husband burns for than I do during the same interval. It adds up so much faster than walking because you use all your large muscle groups at one time.

    Enjoy!!
