how long???

I started MFP on January 1 of this year. So, exactly one month in.
I started out at 192 lbs.
I am currently 3 lbs. down to 189.

I have completely cut out soda, going back for seconds, and sticking to a 1,500/day calorie amount.
I never used to excercise, and now run for 20-30 minutes every other day.

I am not really disappointed or anything, I feel a little better overall, but just curious if anyone else made similar changes and started noticing weight loss after one month? Or is what i am doing just going to help me to feel better but maintain my current weight?
Thanks much!
J

  • I [re]started on 1/17/12 at 229, and since then I've lost 4 lbs from making better food decisions and slowly re-intergrating exercise into my routine.

3 lbs in a month is a great start, and chances are your running routine has helped you build the muscles in your legs (which weighs more than fat). Some people see a signifigant drop in their first few weeks, I like to call this "shock weight" because it's like the system is saying "OMG WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" But after that it will begin to taper off to a slow, steady, and safe rate as the body adjusts to the changes.

Just hang in there, and keep to your healthy changes, especially cutting out soda. Some things to consider might be a new workout routine and/or weight lifting in between your running days.

Congrats on your 3lbs, and running! I <3 running! You probly aren't gaining muscle from running, *maybe* if you were doing strength training and juicing, but not from running alone for a month.
I took a quick peek at your diary - lots of fast food. I'd try cutting that out for a couple of weeks and see if you feel even better. Too much sodium might be holding you back.
  • thanks for the responses!
and @theginnyray: fast food is definitely something i am trying to fix. used to eat it daily. now trying to cut it down to 2 or 3 days a week....which is still terrible, i know, but not nearly as bad as every day. also been trying to eat burgers without the buns, etc...ordering a small when its available..and only doing water. But i should try to get it 100% out of the diet!
having a pregnant wife who craves late night taco bell on a weekly basis doesnt help either! haha!

Generally, 0.5 - 2 lbs per week is good weight loss, and in a healthy range. So I think you're doing great! Just keep at it. Start incorporating healthier foods and more exercise as you go along. Great start!
