Gym- Flying solo or with company?

I've read people work harder and for longer if they go to the gym with a friend/friends. Personally I go by myself- loner! But I can go at my own speeds, spend as little or long as I like and dont get distracted.
Do most people on here feel more motivated by their own company?

yeah definitely alone. i lose myself in my music and stay focused on my workouts. going with friends or even chatting it up with people at the gym wastes time. i like to do circuits, intervals, and stuff like that so i need to be on my own time.0

All by my lonesome. I've brought my mom a few times, only because she doesn't go often enough to get her own membership, but we barely socialize while we're there. I might show her how to use a machine or try and encourage her, but she knows when I go, I'm there to accomplish something.0

Yeah I like the company when I go with my friends but it gets annoying when I have to finish my cardio when they finish and do the amount of sit ups etc as them when I know I can push myself a lot more. In terms of not being bored it's good to have friends but I don't think it really helps me push myself or anything like that0

I fly solo. I am usually too busy trying to beat my previous day's work to socialize much. I do read my Kindle while I am trying to make it to my goal.0

I like to go alone. I have a husband and a 5 year old little girl, I love em to death but I love my break!0

I like going alone...often my wife will come with me and i have to tell her to stop talking and focus on the task at hand.0

It is by nature a solitary creature...0

I go by myself, because I get distracted if I go with a friend.0

I have a gym buddy. She is at a higher fitness level than I am so it really motivates me to push myself and try to keep up.0
-
I fly solo. I tried the whole buddy thing and it was horrible. The only time I like company is if I want to do relaxing exercise. Like walk leisurely with a friend and chit chat. But in my day to day routine...no thank you.0

I go alone. If any of my friends had gym memberships I'd probably go with them, but they don't.0
-
I generally go alone, just because it gives me time to focus on myself and things I need to get done. But for classes, I tend to go with a friend so I'm not the only one laughing at myself with my complete uncoordinated self!0

Cardio solo, but I have started working with a trainer and that is awesome, so I think doing strength training with someone would be cool!!!!0

I do both. Twice a week I go with a friend for an hour or two. We chat, but it's not before we burn 200 cals in cardio. Then we swap machines during sets & show each other how to do certain things. I also go alone & get a lot of my focus in there too. On top of that I work out at home alone, so personally I look forward to my 2 days a week to workout with a friend & make sure I'm pushing myself harder. No slacking if someone is there to watch me.0

I met up with friends over the weekend, I ended up staying longer so I did burn more calories. So I guess there is some truth to having company, but for the most part I fly solo.0

I go alone. I'm doing NROL4W and everyone else is just interested in killing themselves on the treadmil. I can't seem to get them to understand that building muscle is actually a good idea.0

I definitely prefer to go solo...i like to crank my Ipod up and get to work.0

Definitely alone! The gym I go to is at my work so 75% of the time I get the whole gym to myself! It bugs me when someone else comes in.0

Thats ME time, I go alone all the time and love it!0

I go alone. I've gone with my boyfriend once, who tried to turn calorie-burning (on the ellipticals, which state how much you've burned) into a competition, and I just couldn't take that - not to mention that I like to switch machines on a whim and just generally do my own thing. I also prefer to listen to music.
I won't rule out going with people, but it's not my preferred method.0 -
I do it alone, only because none of my friends are willing to workout. That said, I think is better to have a workout partner. That way you can push eachother to reach your goal sooner.0
-
I'm good with either. Currently I don't have a weight training partner and I enjoy the freedom of going at my own pace and having complete control of my workouts. I crank my tunes and totally focus on my workout, with no outside distractions. No wasted time spent talking or joking around...my workouts are quick and efficient. (except in January when the gym is so busy it resembles a Wal-Mart on Boxing Day)
However...although I prefer working out on my own, I can honestly say that I got much better results when I used to lift with a regular partner a few years ago. We would push each other on every set and try to one-up each other all the time. And since I tend to be on the lazy side when it comes to working out, having someone there forcing me to do "just one more" was always extremely beneficial for me.0 -
I go alone. Just me and my iPod.
If I go with people I feel like I need to be committed to stay near them and to leave when they're bored.
I always go with a plan, and I know most people that I know get bored after 20 mins.0 -
I prefer solo EXCEPT if I'm going to a class..then it's nice to have a buddy.0

I go alone. I like that time to myself and I get in an out of the gym faster if I'm not socializing. Having said that, I've never really worked out with anyone, and what I think I would like about that is to have someone to spot me and vice versa. I might try lifting heavier if I had someone with me for that reason. And if my workout partner was at a relatively equal fitness level as me or better, I think it could push me to do more.0
-
I can go either way, I have worked with a gym partner and have had positive results and have done my own thing for months and that worked fine also. I don't mind working out with a gym partner as long as they are dedicated and are as focused as I am.0

My husband and I go to the gym together and do side-by-side treadmills or arc trainers...then go our separate ways to weight train. We enjoy our time together and pursuing common goals (and, yeah, we're a little competitive). :0)0

I thought I may need company, but when I found my way (still a Gym -newbie myself) I prefer the solo thing. My other exercise Walking and Swimming I enjoy that 'ME' time alone.
De-stresses and Un-depresses me
The only company I welcome is my 15yo daughter on the treadmill or class - other family members have that offer there.
Great opportunity for bonding.0 -
With someone will make sure i go, but they usually slow me down or distract me. though i like a friend in classes like Zumba.
Solo I work harder, but don't always make the time.
I need to find someone I can meet at the gym and say, "OK, go" and then part ways, lol.0
