I have struggled with cholesterol since I was 38 and I am a naturally thin small-framed person. I do have a family history of cholesterol issues. They put me on a cholesterol medication, but at the same time I started trying to eat a lower fat lower carb diet (I was also diagnosed prediabetic with a family history of diabetes).

My initial cholesterol was 389. I had some minimal success lowering my cholesterol with the new eating plan and medication. Then, I was diagnosed a year and four months later with ovarian failure (menopause). I started doing some research and found that there is a huge link to menopause and increased cholesterol levels. I started taking HRT and three months later I had decreased my cholesterol by two-thirds. The nurse could not believe it when she called me---this was the same nurse who gave me the news that it was 389 in the first place and she has a terrible bedside manner!!! She asked me what I was doing and I told her that I think the HRT made the difference because in that three-month time period I did not work as hard on my diet.

Something to think about anyway! The dietary changes are definitely needed but they might not be all that is at play.
