Stones to Lbs.....

OK... So I'm confused!!

I weigh 10st 7.4 pounds. For the purpose of this, lets say 10st 7lbs.

I know there is 14lbs to a stone.... so 10stone would be 140lbs. Then surely I'd add on the 7lbs to get 147lbs!

But the stone to lbs calculators makes 10.7stone into 149lbs?!?!

Confused.com!!!

Anyone shed some light?

10.7 stone means 10 stone and 7/10th of a stone, it doesn't actually mean 10 stone 7lbs (took me ages to figure that out myself

So my scales when it says it weighs in stones and lbs aren't?

Not sure, I am a metric girl myself, but have been using converters online and came across it this way. I reckon your scales are telling you you are 10.7 stone, which works out as 10 stone 9.8lb (just got my calculator out)

Actually am just reading your OP again. Your scales should be fine, but you need to find a different online calculator, one that calculates stone and lbs to lbs (rather than stone to lbs).
    Hope I make sense!

Your scales will tell you 10st 7lbs but the calculator here will tell you 10.7 (At least I think that is what the site is saying!)

Your scales will be giving you the weight in stones and lbs.

So if they show 10 - 7 then you weigh 10 stones and 7 lbs.

But this is *not* the same as 10.7 stone, so if you put 10.7stone into a calculator you will get the wrong answer.

10 stone and 7lb is 10.5 stone, not 10.7 stone.

Our UK system of using stones and lbs is really messy. Try to get yourself into thinking in either KG or lbs as these numbers are much easier to deal with than any base-14 counting system.
  • Argh, I had this EXACT same problem when I first started logging and it took ages for me to get my head round it!

Basically, your scales are right but it's telling you in stones and pounds, not just stones. So it's saying you're 10 stone and 7 pounds. So you need to do 10 x 14 + 7 basically, as you rightly pointed out. You can't just put in 10.7 stones into a converter because, as Siannah says that's saying you're 10 stone and 7/10th of a stone... because the converter is only working in stones and not stones and pounds like your scales are.

The best thing to do is either see if you can change your scales to measure in pounds only, or work it out manually every time which is a pain but at least that way you get an accurate reading.

    All the best x

I might weigh in lbs to avoid this confusion.... but then it gives me "." of a lb which gets my brain buzzled again lol

10 stone and 7lb is 10.5 stone, not 10.7 stone.

This is what I meant! (so hard to explain). And yes, go metric!!

Hahaha, I love that my BF has replied to the thread - he was the one trying to explain this to me for weeks before I got my head round it hahaha!! xx

Yes just do lbs only, it's much easier when you force your brain to do it that way x

Decimals of a lb really aren't worth bothering with in my opinion.

If you weigh yourself in lbs, either round the decimal up/down, or just chop it off altogether and ignore it (equivalent to rounding down).

FWIW my scales weighed me in at 16 stone, 8.25 lbs this morning.

    I logged 16 stone 8 (232lbs) and I didn't feel guilty about chopping off the 0.25lbs.
