Hiking Footwear

My daughter and I started hiking last year (we live in Indiana, so it's hard to do it now). We go on moderate to rugged trails (as rugged as southern IN gets, it's certainly not the mountains). We see a lot of hills, rocks, creeks and even climb over fallen trees. I lost my footing last time and hurt my knee. Currently, all we have are tennis shoes and I know those aren't going to be feasible. We will be going to a sportings good store to buy shoes, but my question is, what kind of shoe do you use? How do you know if you need hiking boots or hiking/trail shoes?

I have a pair of Nevados - reasonably priced and great traction, also very sturdy. I highly recommend. I also think they're lightweight enough that you can wear them anytime. They're not super heavy hiking boots.0
