I don't comment or congratulate on diary entries...

I don't congratulate on cleaning or short walks - I mean, in real life if someone said "I did laundry and cleaned my kitchen this weekend" - would you say congratulations? I would not. I also do not congratulate on short walks - just like if my friend ran to the store - I don't say congratulations when they come back. I guess I only make the type of comments I would make to any dieting friend in real life.

I congratulate on weight loss and comment/congratulate on exercise - especially exercise I'm in envy of.

    Yep Agree!

I sometimes become nasty or over friendly to people and actually tell them you should do more tomorrow... Probably, that's why I have a very small friend list

I comment on everything I can comment on, with the exception of food diaries most of the time. Though sometimes I comment on food logs too. And I try and give constructive criticism when I see a need. For example, if I notice someone on my list is CONSISTENTLY eating far too little, I will let them know that I think they should eat more. However, I still think that people deserve to be commended for doing their best, for logging, and for exercising (no matter how little it is).

A small burn is better than no burn, and unless you really know the person, you don't know their routine. It could have been a short walk because it was a rest day. Or maybe it was a really busy day and they didn't have time so they chose to squeeze in a walk on a break at work or something. They deserve the recognition for having done something, rather than nothing.

The type of support a person needs depends on that person's personality. I feel it is our own individual responsibility to find people who motivate us to be friends with. If someone is making comments on your statuses that piss you off or don't motivate you at all, why are they on your list? Remove them, and find people who motivate you to be the best you can be. We're all adults and I don't feel it's my job to tell everyone else what they should or should not be doing or eating. So I do the best I can to let them know I'm here and I support them by posting as often as possible on their updates, and I offer encouragement when it's needed.

I try to comment on as many "calories burnt," "weight lost" and "days logged in" updates as possible - to me, that means that person is committed to making a positive change to themselves. It doesn't matter to me if they burnt '100 calories cleaning' or '10,000 calories mountaineering' - they have got off their butts and been motivated enough to do something towards their goal. I hope all my friends find me supportive and encouraging...whether it's a generic "well done" or a more personal statement - I always mean what I say!!

To be honest, I very rarely congratulate on "diary completed" entries. I will sometimes make a comment if someone has left a comment themselves about their own especially good or bad day because then people obviously need reassurance or advice - but in general, I think completing the food diary is something that we should all be doing everyday anyway to make the most of the website, so I don't see it as being particulary 'special' to have completed your diary at the end of the day.

this^^^ also, I will check out a diary and make a comment, IF i know that person has been having a difficult time, but its not something I normally do.
  • The majority of my MFP friends are very clean eaters, I compliment them for that since I know the temptations we avoid to do that.

All my MFP friends are avid weight lifters, we might not burn a ton of calories but we are creating gains. I compliment them for that.

    Just for friday gossip :)

When would you congratulate someone on their update:
    1. If they have burnt more than x calories in workout on that day.
    2. If they have lost x lbs from previous weigh in.
    3. If they have had an exceptionally nutritious day.

I have seen people congratulating/commenting on profile even for things like burning 1/3 of their normal workout routine, or having just a normal day for food etc. etc.
Do you feel its still motivational and inspirational? Or it just p****s you off?

    PS:
    1. I would comment someone if they had their normal or above normal workout, even nag them when they don't :) and would love the similar comments vice-versa.
    2. This post is not intended for ppl on my friends list as I like them all.

I usually comment on if they have lost weight (no matter how small, every little bit counts) and if they have worked out.

It is not up to me to judge why somebody would only burn 1/3 of their normal workout routine, perhaps that was their intention or perhaps they didn't feel well that day. Every workout counts.

I consider it supportive to also GET comments on my profile as well as me trawling right back through my wall until I reach the point whereby I last commented on somebody's profile and work forwards from there.

I have just done a massive crop on my list, some people just could not be bothered, support goes both ways.

True, but different personalities & activity levels will probably dictate how you respond...even my dieting work friends don't get a kudos from me when they get back from walking their 20 minute break (exception - co-worker in physical therapy after injury, but they weren't dieting...just trying to walk normal again) - I acknowledge it's certainly better than nothing, but I don't feel the need to comment on it one way or the other, it doesn't mean I am belittling their efforts.... but that's my personality. I'm not easily impressed. If I say congrats or comment it's because I am impressed, inspired, or motivated in some way by you. Not everybody moves me.... I may not comment on every walk you take but if you put up a weight loss post you'll then see my sincere congrats and well wishes - I will mean every word of it.
