BROKEN WRIST.....WHAT TO DO????

I BROKE MY WRIST ONE WEEK AGO WHILE ON VACATION AND NOW VERY UPSET AS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO GYM, YOGA SO PUTS MY FITNESS STUFF ON HOLD AND I HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME LOOSING EVEN WITH EXERCISING.....ANY SUGGESTIONS???????

Are you able to walk vigorously? If so, you can walk outside, on the treadmill, recumbent bike, etc. if your gym has the equipment. Just find a way to keep moving without hurting your wrist. Good luck!0

So sorry about your wrist. Do you have any exercise dvd's? Leslie Sansone's walking indoor workouts are a good alternative to walking outside. The exercises are more like very low impact aerobics. Great workout and it won't affect your wrist, just your weight! :bigsmile:0

You could get some of those yaktrax things (or something similar) that you can put over your shoes, they help a lot.0 -
I sympathise. I broke my hand and dislocated fingers in October and basic took 12 weeks off exercise and am now 1.5st heavier than i was ( too many ice-cream cuddles) and I don't recommend this approach.
try to fit exercise in where you can if you are cleaning dust the ceiling - one handed and do calf raises. do careful squats while cleaning
do what Yoga you can and if you go to a class phone up and see if you can get them to help you come up with a routine you can do! obviously no downward facing dogs but a good practitioner should be able to help and maybe you'll have to do the routine at home but it should keep you flexible
when you walk try to concious engage stomach and butt! ( walk from your core) take the stairs not the lift and take them twice if you can do it with out people looking at you funny
hula hooping helped me because I could do it for 10 mins at a time with my hands in the air above my head ( starting the hoop with your good hand and being very careful to keep the bad one out of the way just start with a big 40" or bigger hoop)
aqua aerobics was something else I tried as I was on the road to recovery
the key thing for me was for the first 8 weeks I looked at my wrist as a barrier to exercise and comforted myself with food
i was better weeks 8-12 but for 12+ I looked at it as a challenge to find new ways to exercise.
how about a dance class - tango / ballroom dance?
how about everything you sit down you can't use your hands at all to stand ( requires allot of thought but try holding your broken hand every time you sit or stand )
let us know how yu get on and what crazy ways to exercise you come up with!
good luck and you have all my sympathies. I hope it's a simple break and heals quickly ( eating healhier calcium vit d etc will help you heal and you can get back to exercise quicker)

I've been going to the gym with a big old brace on my ankle (stress fracture) and no one's stopped me. I'm pretty sure I've seen people in casts, and I know there's one girl who's in a wheelchair who still lifts. (And wow if she isn't inspirational!!!)0 -
There are still lots of workouts you can do...run, walk, stationary recumbent bike, etc. You may not be able to lift weights, but you can still exercise. Even sit ups...0

Seriously just watch what you eat, move as much as you can and let yourself get better. Don't stress yourself out too much... just try to take the best care of yourself that you can (and that doesn't mean giving in to comfort cravings... lol) Whatever you do, don't try to do too much. Your hand needs to heal as much as possible because even after it's fully healed, it can still hurt later in life when the weather changes, etc ... and it will be more susceptible to injury, so take extra care!0

I'VE BEEN IN THE SAME SITUATION, MY FIRST SUGGESTION WOULD BE TO TURN OFF YOUR CAPSLOCK KEY.
My second suggestion would be to focus on lower body and core for a bit. Stationary bike, treadmill, body weight squats, crunches, etc.
Last, be very careful with your wrist even when you think you are healed. -listen- to your doc/PT/ortho. These things take time to fully heal.0 -
I once sprang my wrist really bad while doing rows with P90X. But I kept working out, I just didn't do anything that would put pressure on my wrist. You can still do plyo, a lot of yoga, cardio, running, etc. Find things you can do that works around the injury.0

you can still go for a fast walk on the treadmill at the gym with a cast on your wrist, they won't stop you.
I would recommend against running though unless you are very used to it because if you get unstable you may find yourself reaching for the grab bars with your bad hand and hurting yourself, but a nice 4 MPH power walk for an hour will burn hundreds of calories (300 for me, but it increases with height and weight).
Or if even walking makes you uncomfortable with the cast on, use the recumbent bikes! Sit there with a book in hand and pedal hard for an hour. That will keep those creeper pounds from crawling back on and undoing your hard work!0 -

I like Leslie Sansone too:) Check your local library to see if you can borrow them. I usually try to do a trial run with the library's collection before I purchase the DVD:) Happy walking0 -
It would be harder if it was a part of your leg that was broken. Don't let this be an excuse! There are plenty of workouts that you can do with a broken wrist like most zumba moves, and all lower body workouts. If you want to go easy, just go for power walks, fast if you can to help your cardio. The ultimate idea here is just to keep moving. You can also continue with the gym, just save the arm workouts. If they won't let you walk at the gym...how about a local mall. We have a ton of mall walkers here in MN as it is normally so cold and icy...not so much this winter. But I have been there when people are there for exercise and they really move. Then when you are done walking you can spend your money on all the cute clothes you have walked by!!!! Hope the wrist heals fast.0

Sounds a little strange, but have you tried marching in place? You might want to place your good hand on a wall for balance if you need it, but then just lift one leg then the other; you can toggle the intensity with speed or how high you lift your knees. If that's still too easy, find a step and go up and down, switching which leg you start with, over and over (same thing about touching a wall for balance if you need it). Not super interesting, but enough until the slipping danger is past outside (unless you are somewhere where you have to wait for the thaw...)0

But I don't see why your gym won't let you walk on the treadmill or use the stationary bikes (especially the recumbent bikes - you don't even have to hold on for those). And if you haven't gotten a cast yet, you can see if they'll give you a water proof one. I broke my hand a few years ago and they gave me a water proof cast and I still went to swim practices every day. You could try a water aerobics class if there are any offered at your gym - no fear of falling that way, the water will hold you up. And it's great exercise. If you can get a waterproof cast and want any suggestions on some good exercises without joining a class, send me a PM, I used to teach all sorts of water exercise classes!

Squarts, Crunches, Calf raises. It it's too cold/snowy outside, walk through your house or jog in place. High knees and zombie walks(imagne how a zombie walks and repeat raising legs up slowly and lowering back down slowly) work great. Do leg lifts from both sides, on your front and on your back. Plank from your elbows if you're able or even a 1 armed/side plank. Yoga poses like warrior are great. And lastly dance.. look up some belly dance moves, they work your core great, or some club music will get you going to the beat.. Zumba is good too BC you can avoid using your arms if needed.0

Thanks for the responses, after i see surgeon next week to see if i need surgery i will get noving somehow some way i just for this week want to keep swelling down and keep it still to try and avoid surgery!!!!!!! and i am keeping food on the radar and sticking to healthy !!!!!0
