1st trip back in the gym

I have been lifting and running the past year and have been able to shed 139 pounds in a year. The issue that has arisen for me is that for the last 4 months of 2011 I was doing cardio only due to being in Grad school and no time to lift. (Taking 2 accelerated classes in one mini term, plus working full time and raising a family). I went back to the gym for the 1st time last night and was incredibly weak. Weaker than I have ever been. I was wondering if this is normal? Even though I wasn't liftin I was still running between 15-20 miles per week. What can I do to get my strength back quick? I'm guessing just hard work, but any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
