I've been doing a step aerobics class at the gym, and today the trainer wore a heart monitor to give us an idea of how many calories we during during the class. The class is one hour long, and it is pretty vigorous. When we were done, her heart monitor said she burned 1,087 calories!!!! I was keeping up with her the whole time.

Could I possibly have burning that much too? MFP says that 1 hour of step aerobics burns 581 calories. That's a pretty big difference, so I don't know what to believe!

I depends on how vigorous the class was. You could try borrowing a moniter from the gym you attend or getting one of your own. They are fairly reasonably priced.

Is it hers, or did she borrow it from someone else just for that class? B/c if it belongs to a man twice her size, for example, the calorie burn would be way off. Just wondering.

I'm 129 lbs and I have to bust my *kitten* to burn 9 calories per minute. People that are smaller burn fewer calories b/c it doesn't take as much energy to move a 130 lb body as it does to move a 200 lb body. And people that are in better shape have to work harder to burn the same calories b/c their body is more efficient. I would say it is possible that she really burned that amount of calories depending on her size and effort (although I'm sure her effort was through the roof since she's the trainer) but *maybe* something might be off, like if the HRM is not hers.

Even if hers was accurate for *her*, you cannot base your calorie burn off of hers b/c you are likely not the same size and your level of effort may be different due to a difference in fitness. If you want to get the best possible estimate (which would still be an estimate) you need to get your own device and program it to your own stats.

I think it makes a difference from person to person! Just get a cheapy one off Amazon. It will give you an idea of how many you burned personally!

1,000 in a hour is doable, but it is a pretty serious workout. As a 175 lbs guy, I have to run 7:30 pace for an hour to burn 1,000 (or 8 MPH for an hour). That is a pretty solid workout and I doubt I could work that hard in a one hour step class.
