Buring Calories and Intake

So I'm really confused about what to do when I exercise. I'm shooting for eating about 1200 calories a day. Usually, I burn 400ish during exercise. Am I supposed to eat those back? Is 1200 what my body is supposed to be burning by itself every day? If you can enlighten me, let me know! Thanks!
