The idea of a weekly noncompliant "cheat" meal is that, theoretically, this regular binge will increase the output of thyroid hormones involved in regulating metabolism, and will cause the body to increase its expected basal metabolic rate—that is, your body will supposedly "work" as if you're going to give it the increased number of calories all week, meaning a reduced diet will act as underfeeding, fueling weight loss.



Whether that's how a cheat meal actually works is widely debated, but no matter the mechanism, cheat meals do result in greater weight loss in certain studies: In one from the National Institutes of Health, men who participated in a double-calorie day increased their metabolism by 9% in the 24 hours following the cheat.
