How do you set your weight loss goals?

I know that MFP does some of it for you; but I was just watching a show and they were saying if you BMI is over 40%, to set the goal at 25% of original body weight in 16 weeks... that seems a little high to me.

One part of me does want to lose this weight as fast as possible... the other part, slow and steady wins the race. I know I didn't gain this weight overnight and what's most important to me is that I make lifestyle changes and keep this weight off for good!

The other part of me doesn't even want to set a weight goal... I want to run 1/2 mile without stopping at 5mph by the end of Feb and I want to work out 5 days a week and I want to be under my calorie goal 27 days out of 28... so for every four weeks I can have one day with a little extra. Right now I don't know that I need the last one and I've eaten out and not been tempted...

What do you think? How do you set your weight goals? If you set a weight goal and don't reach it do you get discouraged? Thanks for any and all comments/suggestions/ideas!
