Losing 4+ lbs in one week

I officially weighed in today and lost 4.6lbs since my last weigh in. Don't get me wrong, I am excited but wonder if anyone else as experienced this. My doctor said because I am in the "morbidly obese" BMI range, it is safer to lose the weight quickly than to stay so obese. Normally I lose about 2.5-3 pounds a week so this week was a bit of a surprise. Just curious
Thanks for opinions.

Yep it happened to me this morning to... exactly 4.6lbs.
I'm on week 6. The week before last, I only lost about 0.5lb. This week... nine times that! My body did a tectonic shift.
I ate at almost maintenance all last week too... waaay more than I ate the week before. Maybe there's something to that "eat at maintenance once every couple of months" idea after all!
The other possibility I'm considering is that my previous weigh in was somehow in error and I actually lost a steadier 2lbs a week.0 -
Congrats on the loss! I've lost this much in a week, but it was closer to when I first started losing weight. In the beginning I had about 120 lbs to lose. I ate as much as MFP told me to and when I exercised I ate back the majority of those calories. I still do this. So, as far as I'm concerned, I did everything I was supposed to do. The rest was up to my body. Now, some of this this could be water weight and most likely is- so, don't worry about it and just enjoy it.0

Woah... I'm feeling a bit twilight zone-ish right now... I weighed in this morning and the scale said 140.5 (from 144, i got off and reset the scale 3 times!)...I'm convinced the scale was lying to me, so I'm going to weigh myself again tomorrow to see...
Very strange occurrence with us nonetheless...0 -
I have lost 5lbs 3weeks in a row and this week it was only 2. If you are very heavy, like me, it comes off in bigger numbers.0

It happens sometimes. Enjoy it, because it won't happen every time. lol0

Just go with it! Its fab! This did happen to me a lot when I was starting out. Not too much these days lol x0

That's happened to me before ... I asked my nutritionist why ... She said that alot of times our bodies dont "give up" the weight on a weekly basis ....and then once it finally does "shift", you lose alot all at once ... I'd go 3 weeks without losing ANYTHING (talk about frustration!) .. and then one day, I'd hop on the scale .. and BOOM .. down 4 or 5 pounds . It averaged about 1 pound a week ... which is normal ... thats probably whats going on here .... Your doing something right, so just keep on doing it0

I don't loss any during my TOM, but the week after I always drop a big number. Congrats to you!0

Well done! Like you I have been dropping bigger numbers but I am safe in the knowledge that I have been eating my calorie goals and importantly my nutritional goals.
In my first week I dropped about 4.5KG! My second week about 3KG and the last couple of weeks have been aroun 1.5-2kg so I might just be on track now. I have quite a bit to loose. Try and get your body fat measured somewhere too. If you loose weight but your body fat isn't going down then your probably not eating enough or your not taking in enough protien. My scales monitor body fat too.
If you have ever seen the biggest looser then you can tell who the bigger guys are from the weight they loose which is why they go on % rather than weight lost.0 -
it's fine starting out. I loss 3, then 1, then gained 1, then loss 70

I've actually been forming a theory about this. I noticed that I can go 1 week and lose .5 lbs and then the next week lose 4 lbs. I also noticed that I can lose 3 lbs between Friday and Monday. What? So here are some of my theories that I think might contribute:
1. water. If you don't drink enough, your body doesn't have enough to repair itself and get rid of what it doesn't need. Then when you do get enough, the body lets go.
2. Maybe the body eliminates those things better when it's occasionally fed more. i.e. Assured of plenty of calories.
3. Maybe the body likes a day or two of rest to recuperate before it lets go of those lbs.
These are all working theories for me. Just thought I'd share.0 -

Yep this makes sense. When you think about it, the body is really a conservation engine. All it wants to do is survive. Millions of years of evolution has put in place an amazingly complex system of hormones and other balancing factors. It makes perfect sense to me that the body would "give up" it's fat reserves more easily if occasionally assured that it wasn't being starved to death. I'd love to know if there were any studies out on this phenomenon.0
