I am trying to tone using the weight machines at my gym. I have no clue what I'm really doing, Help! I was told to only focus on one area of the body (arms, abs, legs) a day, but other than this I dont know what to do.

Bump! The same for me. I like weight training and want to do it 3 x per week. I am a bit scared to use the free-weights (despite constantly reading that they are better), and would like a programme that focuses on machines. Can anyone help or recommend a website that I can use to structure a programme?

    Thankies x

Use free weight to develop a foundation of strength. Relying on machines will get you no where.

Yeah, I have been reading up on weight training, and that seems to be the general consensus. I think the best thing for me to do is talk to one of the staff at my gym and get them to show me what to do with the free weights. Hopefully then I'll stop being such a girl about it and grow a pair! It's just a bit daunting as a youngish girl (kinda small and weedy) walking into a room full of sweaty burly men who look like they know exactly what they're doing!

*slaps self* But I know I'll feel good about it once I get started.

FREE WEIGHTS and follow a program like stronglifts 5x5 or new rules for lifting for women

Get an induction for the weight room and do your program 3x a week

I was so intimidated at using the weight room with all the guys and the butterflies in my stomach the first 4-5 times i went down down there on my own - omg!!!! but I just pretended I knew what I was doing and it paid off

I'm now 7 weeks into stronglifts and I am loving the results and feel amazing - I even have some new guy friends from the weight room but I still get the funny looks, but now I just stroll in all happy and bouncy and I know what I'm doing now and I think a few of the guys are actually more intimidated of me than I will ever be of them now :D

Ladies I understand how you feel, I started working out 6 weeks ago and had no idea how to use the machines or what area they even targeted. I hired a friend of mine to train me for one month at the gym, this way she was able to show me how to use the equipment & free weights properly. If you don't have someone like this I would highly recommend that you speak with a trainer at your gym, I'm sure they would be happy to put together a routine that will meet your requirements.

Also just remember why you are there at the gym....to get into shape/lose weight/tone etc.... don't be intimidated by those sweaty men. Besides half the time they are too busy looking at themselves in the mirror to notice anyone else. LOL
    Good Luck!!
