last night for the superbowl, i made two huge pots of chili. my guests were the heat-loving kind so i made the chili to their taste. it was hot! we have 3/4 of a pot left and my kiddos don't have the same palate.

how do i tone down a spicy chili to a more mild flavor? i was thinking of adding more beans and maybe some chicken broth? i am not sure if that will work though. what do you suggest?

You can't really tame the spicy - and it might be more spicy today!

Your best bet is to add more beans, more meat, and more sauce WIOTHOUT adding any more spice - basically, just add more of everything except the spice.

hmmm. got some really neat suggestions from there. a can of pineapple chunks? gotta try that. i also like adding a can of refried beans or adding lime. thanks!
  • In addition some more beans... meat... believe it or not, canned pumpkin will absorb that spice plus give some vitamin A to each serving plus a bit more fiber. (Tip: if you don't already have a pinch of cinnamon added.. add some with the pumpkin.)

I also serve my kids chili with sour cream and cheese as that ALWAYS cools the spice. Plus the latter has some calcium and protein.

pumpkin is a great idea and i will remember that for next time. i ended up trying the peanut butter trick (i didn't have pineapple or refried beans in the cupboard and didn't want to run to the store) with additional beans and it worked like a charm. really amazing. :)
