EXERCISE AND FIBROMYALGIA

Hi all,

Well, I've been ATTEMPTING to work out as much as possible, but my body is rebelling against me. I can barely get through a workout (right now is just walking 1/2 hour on the treadmill) without excrutiating pain in my legs (knees, ankles and my right calf (on the outside). My last workout was Saturday and today, Monday, I can barely walk. I'm desperately trying to work through the pain, but I'm getting a bit discouraged by the 'after effects'. I'm going out this week to get brand new trainers to see if that will help - but I'm having my doubts.

I love to walk! I have a lovely area outside of my work where I can go and listen to the birds and just enjoy nature, but I'm afraid that if I went today, they'd have to send out a search party for me. I will admit freely that I HATE the gym, I go only because I need to exercise and on my doctor's orders.

Anyone else having this problem? Any advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mom, I can relate. I have to change things up a lot. The repittion gets me. I used to run outdoors, that is my love. I had to stop running years ago. I suggest to keep looking for other exercises you love to do. Adapt them how you need and switch them around. I have many DVD'S to workout with. Zumba, Turbo Jam, WII, Belly Dance, Yoga. Maybe you can won't have to give up walking if you switchthis it up. Other thoughts, exrcise bike, mini tramps and sometimes swimming. I wish I had a dollar for everytime someone said to try swimming because it is easy on your joints. During my flare ups, swimming kills me. LOL. But last spring I took a Belly Dance class and loved it. It is such a good workout but much easier on joints than many other forms of exercise. What other forms of exercise have you tried?
  • I take pre-emptive Aleve before I work out, so the pain doesn't have as much of a starting point to snowball off of. Since I have joint problems in addition to the Fibro, I do my cardio on the elliptical. Honestly, starting was hellish, and I still need to have a couple of days a week of total rest, but overall improving my fitness has done a lot to improve my Fibro symptoms.

I refuse to cause myself more pain than I am already in. I take 3 to 5, 15 minute walks a day with my dogs, that is what works for me. I can't do machines without causing pain, so I won't do it. I will dance around a bit and do stretches, and that will have to do for my exercises, I had younger friends tell me I wasn't doing enough or I needed to weight train or house work doesn't count, well, walk in my fibromyalgia shoes, and then tell me that!!!! lol I think the belly dancing sounds like great fun,Joy, I am glad you found that. Good luck to all of us. I am taking baby steps into the glutten free eating, I hear that has helped alot of people, so I think it is worth trying.

R.Red, many just don't understand. Maybe they can't unless they go though it themselves. As I wake up stiff and hurting, I am frustrated this morning. I had to give up my first love, running, and hope I don't have to give up more but my body is talking to me. Just remembering that about a month ago I went through a symptom free spell even though exercising. I have been slipping more on eatting the white stuff and now am having more symptoms. I have new motivation to clean up my diet.
