Runners: Maybe hip butt pain after a run

Hey there runners...Got a quick question.
After a couple of runs, I've experienced some soreness in the (maybe) hip upper glute/butt area, not on the side but in the upper butt part. Not sure where this is coming from. No pain or soreness during the run. Any ideas?
Got great shoes...normal mileage, etc.
Thanks
~Dawn

When i first started running i used to experience this pain. I thought it was because i have a HUGE butt and its bouncing up and down as i run. The pain disappeared on its own. Im interested in what others have to say.0

Do you cross train? When I first started running a lot, I would get all kinds of strange pains in that area. After a lot of searching, I finally decided that it was because my leg muscles were stronger than my gluts. I started cross-training and doing exercises that strengthened the other areas of my body. As my muscles became more balanced, the pain went away. Plus, it was good to rest those running muscles every other days or every couple of days.0

I had pain in the beginning as well. STRETCH!!! A LOT, ALL DAY sometimes, keep going and work through it, it will go away.0

Could be SI Joint. I had some problems with mine for a while. Pretty painful.0

I have been doing PT for 6 weeks, plus 2 visits to the orthopedist to figure out similar pain. So far the cause remains a mystery. At one point I was in so much pain I couldn't even run a mile. I'm building up and am up to 3 miles at once now.
Don't ignore it. I did for entirely too long. How often and how far are you running? Have you recently bumped up your mileage by quite a bit? I hadnt' run a lot over the summer, then started back with a vengeance in late september. That is what caused my problems.0 -
Are you stretching enough after runs?0

I'm no expert but it could be the start of 'ITB' pain. I used to suffer with this but now do lots of hip flexor and glute strenghtening and seems to have cured it.0

there is a subluxation in that area (muscle/spine alignment)
a trip the Chrio or two will fix it and give you tips as to how NOT to ahve that pain anymore0 -
I had that pain when i first started and from a few docs appointments it was pretty much stated that i have lose hips, they dislocate often. Also mine was from scoliosis and arthritis in my hip sockets.
After awhile the pain subsided.0 -

scoliosis? Seriously, we need a DNA test My momma never told me I had a long lost sister LOL>0 -
I was going to guess sciatica. Nerves come down the back, fork, and head down the but into the legs. My husband has had pain about there from sciatica.
I'd recommend trying a yoga routine that has a lot of streching. Everything is connected. I keep my plantar fascitis under control by doing a soleus stretch (deep calf) and that takes care of it. Amazing to me - stretches local to the pain don't fix it. I just give that by way of example that you might need to stretch more than just the painful area. FWIW, a chiropractor figured this out for me.0 -
Thank you everyone for your input !
For me it's a soreness...not a pain. just hadn't felt soreness there before and was curious. I do stretch..however, I admit I probably need to stretch much more than I do. I need to implement that into my daily routine.0 -
i used to get this, but then i got measured for some shoes and my hubby taught me some stretches which i now do after every run. It was my piriformis muscle which was the problem. this is a good video which demonstrates how to stretch it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFtUgS69rPk0

I had this when I first started running. It's the muscles in that area. I still get sore there sometimes if I decide to add some mileage to my run because I'm rolling along and don't want to stop yet. Stretching is key, make sure your stride is correct, and remember to build up slowly. If it persists, find a sports physical therapist or athletic trainer to help you out. (I'm lucky enough to have one in the family that is also a runner.)
I also rotate running with cycling and that seems to help as well.
Good Luck!0
