Muscle soreness - what do you do?

Hello all -

I spent the weekend hiking and today my legs are kinda tired. Is it a good idea to exercise them when they're fatigued? Normally I go to spinning class on Mondays, but my bf is suggesting that I don't. Even with all that hiking though, it was an indulgent weekend in the food department, so I feel like I should get my butt up and sweat.

Do you exercise when your muscles are sore, fatigued, etc.,?

If you can, have a hot bath, I find that always helps sore muscles.
I'd go for a walk, but wouldn't do anything too strenuous until it eases a bit. i find if my legs are sore that they're weak too, so even if I wanted to I couldn't do much.

It's called DOMS, or "delayed onset muscle soreness". It's normal and you can go to spin class.

It all depends on how sore. I think it is good to move through stiffness but your body does need to rest. This is how you build muscle. Little tears in the muscle when you work out need time to adjust and heal o get stronger.
  • I was wondering about what damage I would do to myself, I am 60 years old and after 2 or 3 days in a row power walking my legs ache terribly. So I choose to walk a little slower for a day or two with do a good set of stretches when I'm finished. I have a lot less pain. I also suffer with pinched sciatic nerve that at times causes tears. My doctor said to me that he is confident that I know the difference between muscle that is tired, vs muscle pulled and damaged. He also said the sciatic nerve will probably be causing me problems if I exercise or if I don't. I push myself a little, but feel great. Hot bath works fine too.

Although it hurts, you can definitely do a regular workout with delayed-onset muscle soreness. The pain will go away within the first few minutes.
  • apply heat..and keep on going! the more still you are, the more it hurts..keep it moving!! :)

    - Drink or eat extra protein to aid in muscle repair (within half an hour of the activity is best).
    - Hot epsom salt baths, for each day muscles are sore.
    - Massage.
    - Keep active- light walking, or cardio.

If muscles are fatigued, I'll workout as I normally would.
If muscles are sore, I'll do a light workout to loosen them up.
If muscles are hurt (pulled, etc), I rest.

This. There's actually nothing wrong with the muscle itself, it inflammation in the connective tissue. It's fine to workout with, and getting some blood flow to the area may even make you feel better.

    ^^^ great guidelines.
