Weight or cups?

Today I got black beans from my school cafeteria. I measured out half a cup (back in my room). Just for giggles, I weighed it. Then, I checked Calorie King and entered the gram weight...it was way fewer calories than what the half cup was supposed to be.

Foods are calculated by weight first, right? My beans were just extra plump or something?

Any reason to eat more beans (based on weight rather than cups) is dandy with me...I was just hoping I was understanding things correctly.

yep, weight is a better bet. Maybe they were extra-large beans?

Beans are normally calculated at "dry' weight, Phoen!x, did MFP give it as "cooked" weight?

I have that problem trying to figure out popcorn - not the micorwave kind, but stove-top cooked popcorn (in a pan) OLD SCHOOL, okay?

I made sure to check the cooked. I even cross-checked it with a standard Chipotle serving of beans.

    Weird!

Weight is more accurate than cups. If you had extra fat beans, or extra small beans,,,that would affect the total volume the 1/2 cup of beans makes up. Kind of like a 1/2 cup of feathers will have less weight than 1/2 cup of salt. It really depends on what you are measuring. And you are still going to get somewhat close using cups when measuring out your beans, I'm not packing my kitchen scale to the school cafeteria if I'm you - and when I am out, using metric measurements isin't always possible so good old fashioned cups have to do! Some things you can cheat using cups vs weight and come out pretty accurate, some things will be a little off. But I "cheat" and use cups alot, just more practical some times.:flowerforyou:
