BMR (RMR) Question

OK, let's say my BMR is 1560. Should I be aiming to consume 1560 calories a day? I burn 800-900 according to my cardio equipment (I know that's not necessarily what my body is burning during those exercises). I don't want to be under-eating. I want to be getting that healthy balance and doing it the RIGHT way.

I am assuming you plugged in your weight to a RMR calculator and it gave you 1560...if so, this would be the amount of calories your body consumes while at rest. Sedentary people would multiply this # by 1.4%, moderately active people multiply this number by 1.6 and highly active people would multiply this number by 1.8 If you are looking to lose weight, you will want to subtract 500-800 and this would give you the amount of calories to consume a day. This would create a deficit of 3500-5600 calories a week. One pound = 3500 calories. So this would put you in the ideal range of weight loss.
Make sure that you do get a healthy balance of carbs (50%), protein (25%) and good fats (25%) and from foods that are minimally processed.
Hope this helps.0 -

She is right. At least from what I've read. Calculate your TDEE and subtract 500 cals from that, not your BMR. If you eat below your BMR you are supposedly going into starvation mode, and if you do that you will get a lot of nasty emails from MFP :laugh:0 -

You just made me laugh with that last statement, thank you. I just want to lose the weight the healthy way. I am getting up in the morning and walking 2 miles on the treadmill, and I use my elliptical at night. Just to get the heart going. But I want to make sure my body is getting what it needs0 -

Very much so! I was afraid of getting blasted for being ignorant or something. I really appreciate the information! And I did obtain my RMR from 2 different sources that were a lot closer to each other than MFP was to either of them. So based on this, I am going to set my goal at 1600 for now and see how it works for me0 -

LOL I thought it was funny too..glad it made you laugh. The key to this program is exercise, log both your calories and exercises and eat your calories. Choosing better foods is key... I love sweets but I eat smarter ones (100 calorie). Good luck!0 -
Oh yes. I keep Vitatops and Arctic Zone ice cream on hand for "emergencies" lol. I think I'd rather do that than end up on a binge.0
