Hi all

I've been monitoring what I eat pretty closely now for about 3 months, but I'm struggling with the exercise and toning side. While I can watch what I eat and control cravings (mostly!), I'm beginning to feel a little depressed because I can't seem to move the weight I'm carrying ABOVE my waist, like belly, back and arms.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?!?!?!

You might want to be more specific in your goals. What is it you're wanting? Move the weight? Do you mean you're frustrated because you're not losing fat in those areas? Because genetics will be the usual deciding factor of where you lose weight first/last. You can't spot reduce.
  • If you want to "tone", you need to start lifting heavy. Check out Starting Strength or New Rules of Lifting For Women for a good program. I'm just assuming you're a women because most men wouldn't say tone.

I suppose it's more just slimming down around my belly and arms. I know that larger arms (or batwings) run in my family on my mums side, but my sister doesn't seem to have such an issue with it, and it only really became noticable a year ago. And I think it's definitely frustration. I'd just like to know some exercises that could help.

When you lose weight, your body just gets smaller. Typically in the same proportion as you were before. If you want to change those proportions you need to strength train. You need to adjust your lean muscle mass.

To get rid of "bat wings" you need to lower your body fat percentage. You can't tone away fat.

Thanks for the advice about eh NROL for Women. I had a look on the website and will probably buy the book. And yes, I am a woman
