Heart Rate Monitor for the Gadget-Challenged

So I went out last nite to get my very first HRM monitor so I can better log my calorie burn. Stood in the aisle for who knows how long reading the back of boxes. Settled on this New Balance one which said it was a pedometer, could track calorie burn, etc. Did my workout and apparently it wasn't on the right setting. I took my heart rate at least 5 times and thought it would do some averaging or some report. I couldn't even figure out where to read calories. At the end all I was sure of was that I set the day and time right. I will accept that it was (my) human error so basically, I need an accurate HRM that even a 2 year old could get right. Suggestions? Thanks.

So I couldn't get any help with this one, eh? Well I'm off to step aerobics, maybe I can figure it out. Otherwise I will be returning it to the store.0

I just bought a Sportline 1025 HRM. It has both the chest strap (which is optional) or you can just use the watch part. I am technically challenged but I was able to set it up and find it quite easy use.
The only problem I have had so far is when I am doing the push ups in the 30 DS, it seems my wrist fat pushes against the button and stops the monitor. I have to figure out what to do about that but for everything else it works really well.0
