ok, I am fairly new to running and I want to know what you consider "SPEED WORK" to be. Is this interval training basically?

Depends, what runners call a "fartlek" acutally means to speed up and slow down durring your run. No particular speed or intervals, just random speed play. And then interval training would be a more set distance and pace. 4x1600@7:59 w/800 jogs. That is a specific interval workout but it is also considered speed work. Hope that helps.

I prefer hills and fartleks for building up my stamina. I tend to get injuries when I do traditional speedwork but I might be doing it too fast for my endurance. When I do fartleks, I just pick a landmark and the distance and sprint to it then slow down for a recovery period close to the same distance.

Yep, it always gets chuckles at any running group. That and LSD keep our minds in junior high for sure.
