Is it bad to eat too much protein? Not a whole lot... but does it just turn to fat in excess like sugar and carbs do. I have a low fat and low sugar diet as it is, but sometimes my protein is double my alotted amout.

    would you like to trade our sugar/fats and protein cos i tend to go over in fats and carbs and low on protein all the time... :laugh: seriously, MFP is just a guide and you can adjust your intake to your needs, so if you feel you need your protein, then have it although double the amount is already WAY too much over... i hope you aren't sacrificing fats and carbs too much for the protein, your body needs them all :flowerforyou:

    Most US sites have an allowance of 0.4g-0.6g of protein per pound for active adults.

    too much protein has been linked to osteoperosis and kidney stones. Most Americans do eat too much protein.
    For weight loss, a calorie is a calorie in the long run, whether it is from fat or protein or carbs. It all eventually will turn to fat if not converted into energy. Data that says that carbs turn into fat quicker are under laboratory conditions, for very short spans of time, like hours.

    Here's a good radio story if you're interested;

    If you operate at a calorie deficit, it can't turn to fat. :smile:

    While you can eat "too much", it's really hard if you are a normal adult with healthy kidneys. In one study, people ate 2.8 g of protein per kg of body weight a day with no problems! But most experts say not to go over 2 g per kg of body weight, just to be safe.

    If you weigh 150 lb., that's 136 g of protein a day.

    Upping the percentage of protein a bit might be a good thing. You will then decrease slightly the carb and/or fat. This might mean a drop in scale weight!
